SENIOR TOXICOLOGIST

To support ICF’s dynamic growth and expanding client base, we are seeking a Senior Toxicologist to work in our Health Science Portfolio. This group of 100+ science professionals provide toxicology, hazard assessment, epidemiology, risk assessment, exposure assessment, environmental modeling, and related support that addresses the full spectrum of potentially hazardous agents, including chemicals and microbes. We specialize in identifying and quantifying the effects of environmental pollutants—including metals, pesticides, industrial chemicals, and volatile organic compounds—on human health and the environment.

The Senior Toxicologist’s project work would support federal agencies (such as U.S. EPA and NIEHS) in the design, conduct, and reporting of hazard studies and human health risk assessments for environmental pollutants. In particular, the successful candidate will provide leadership in the identification, interpretation, and integration of molecular biology, mechanistic toxicology, and new approach methodologies (NAMs) data to support hazard identification, mode-of-action analyses, systematic review, and human health risk assessments.  The role will involve evaluating diverse evidence streams including gene expression, -omics, cellular and molecular assays, pathway-based data, and adverse outcome pathway (AOP) frameworks.

What you’ll do 

• Project management and technical leadership activities on multiple projects concurrently involving toxicology data, systematic literature reviews, and risk assessment. Assist in the definition of project scope and objectives and serve as the primary point of contact for client and internal project teams.
• Toxicological report development, including writing methods, results, and discussion sections, reviewing toxicological conclusions based on the test results, and synthesizing findings into a weight of evidence analysis.
• Draft protocol and guidance documents, toxicological reports, manuscripts, project descriptions, and proposals.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams of toxicologists, biologists, epidemiologists, and statisticians to address complex scientific and regulatory questions.
• Toxicology systematic review tasks including literature screening, study quality evaluation, study data extraction, dose-response analysis, incorporation of NAMs and mechanistic data, and data synthesis.
• Supervise, mentor, and train junior- and mid-level staff.

Basic Qualifications:

• Ph.D. in toxicology, pharmacology, environmental science, or related subject with 5+ years of experience in academic, industry, regulatory, or consulting fields.
• OR Master’s degree in toxicology, pharmacology, environmental science, or related subject with 10+ years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Strong working knowledge of mechanistic toxicology and molecular biology
• Experience integrating mechanistic, animal, and human evidence into a weight-of-evidence evaluation
• Experience with mode of action and adverse outcome pathway (MOA and AOP) concepts, frameworks, and analyses
• Experience evaluating molecular, cellular, and mechanistic data including transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and high-throughput screening assays
• Experience with endocrine disruptors, PFAS, PAHs, and other emerging contaminants
• Experience in cancer assessment
• Experience with NAMs, molecular biology techniques, and mechanistic data for regulatory decision-making
• Experience with systematic literature review
• Strong quantitative skills with experience in dose-response analysis, benchmark dose modeling, pathway enrichment analyses, or similar modeling experience
• Strong written and oral communication skills
• Proactive and problem-solving approach to challenges
• Experience/familiarity with government programs
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
• Ability to prioritize, multi-task, and work under strict deadlines in a fast-paced environment
• Experience with project management and staff leadership
• Demonstrated ability to formulate and execute technical approaches to solving scientific questions
