The Senior Technical Writer / Information Architect position will be responsible for the most technically demanding content on UnitedHealth Group’s internal Healthcare Platform knowledge site and for the information architecture that holds its 10,000+ knowledge objects together. This individual will produce architecture guides, API references, and conceptual documentation in direct partnership with platform engineering teams and distinguished engineers, while owning docset hierarchy, navigation, templating standards, and structured authoring practices across the site. As the team’s senior editorial voice, they will review technically complex content produced by writers and engineers alike, mentor the writing staff, and ensure that quality and structural consistency hold as the platform scales.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Creates complex technical content including architecture and API documentation
  • Owns structural IA, template systems, and content frameworks
  • Leads cross-team content reviews and maintains content quality standards
  • Mentors writers and ensures consistency across documentation sets
  • Expert proficiency with developer‑focused documentation formats (Markdown, reStructuredText, schema‑driven formats, OpenAPI/Swagger)
  • Strong knowledge of cloud platforms, distributed systems, APIs, or enterprise architecture sufficient to write and validate deep technical content
  • Experience with Git/GitHub‑based documentation workflows, including branching, PR reviews, linting, build pipelines, and docs CI/CD
  • Ability to create diagrams, system visuals, samples, and task or scenario-based content using tools such as Mermaid, Visio, Figma, or draw.io
  • Familiarity with structured authoring methodologies, reusable component patterns, metadata tagging, and taxonomy alignment
  • Working understanding of accessibility and compliance requirements (WCAG), style automation, and content quality tooling
  • Ability to design, maintain, and improve docset hierarchies, linking strategies, navigation flows, and content discoverability patterns
  • Experience defining or using standardized templates, content models, and structural patterns across large documentation ecosystems
  • Skill in simplifying and reorganizing content for clarity, conceptual alignment, and user-centered task orientation

Required Qualifications:

 

  • 7–10+ years of technical writing experience in a software, cloud, or platform engineering environment
  • 5+ years writing complex, high‑impact documentation such as architecture guides, API references, conceptual documentation, and developer workflows
  • 3–5+ years working directly with engineering teams, product owners, and SMEs in an agile or matrixed environment
  • 3+ years contributing to or leading information architecture (IA), docset structure, navigation frameworks, or template systems
  • 2–3+ years reviewing and editing technically complex content produced by other writers or engineers, enforcing consistency and quality

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you’ll find a far-reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The salary for this role will range from $112,700 - $193,200 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
