Senior Software Engineer (Backend)

About the role

As a Senior Software Engineer at GUDEA, you’ll own mission-critical projects and help shape team culture and policies. You’ll work with other engineers to develop, deploy, and support new features and new products in a fast-paced startup environment. You’ll mentor other engineers and continue to learn and grow as you develop your own professional skills. You’ll demonstrate our core values and set the example for others to follow. You’ll keep up-to-date with best practices in software engineering, and you’ll share them with the rest of the team.

Location: Fully Remote

Travel: less than 5% for in-person company meetings and retreats.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead architectural decisions and guide technical direction to ensure system efficiency and maintainability.
• Collaborate with product managers, designers, and other engineers to develop innovative features and solutions.
• Design, develop, and maintain high-quality, scalable, and secure software solutions.
• Write clean, efficient, and well-documented code while following best practices in software development.
• Ensure security, compliance, and data integrity in all engineering solutions.
• Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve complex technical issues in production and development environments.
• Drive performance optimization, scalability improvements, and system reliability initiatives.
• Conduct thorough code reviews, provide mentorship, and foster a culture of technical excellence within the team.
• Own and improve the CI/CD pipeline to enhance deployment speed and reliability.
• Stay up to date with industry trends and emerging technologies, advocating for best practices and new tools where appropriate.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

• Education: 4-year degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related technical discipline
• Experience: 5-10+ years in professional full-stack or backend-focused software engineering roles
• Proven engineering experience in owning and operating production API and backend systems end-to-end (e.g., APIs, data stores, services)
• Strong system design and architectural judgment
• Ability to work independently, lead by example, and communicate technical tradeoffs clearly
• Pragmatic, execution-oriented mindset in fast-moving environments
• Experience using Spring Framework / Spring Boot and Java to build production applications
• Experience building Temporal workflows and activities
• Experience integrating with third-party APIs
• Experience building containerized applications with tools like Docker
• Experience with distributed version control systems like Git
• Experience using AI-assisted and/or agentic workflows

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with large-scale data stores
• Experience with SQL database optimization
• Experience with graph databases like Neo4j
