Senior Software Engineer

The Senior Software Engineer will solve complex data and performance challenges in Gridline’s SQL Server environment. This role is primarily focused on SQL Server, data warehousing, stored procedures, database performance, SQL jobs, and the data access layer. The successful candidate will also be able to follow data up the stack and occasionally make targeted changes in the C#/.NET and React applications that consume that data.

This role requires someone who can take ownership of ambiguous data problems, investigate independently, ask focused questions when blocked, and drive work to completion without heavy day-to-day direction.

What you will do

• Maintain and improve the complex stored procedures that build the warehouse tables.
• Optimize database performance for large datasets exceeding 300 million rows using indexing, query tuning, execution plan analysis, partitioning strategies, and other SQL Server performance techniques.
• Maintain, troubleshoot, and optimize SQL Server Agent jobs, including job scheduling, failure analysis, retry behavior, dependency review, and performance impact.
• Understand how the data is used throughout Gridline products and be able to identify upstream impacts.
• Ability to understand, analyze, and summarize complex telematics data using SQL.
• Maintain source control of SQL code using Git.
• Participate in Agile ceremonies in 2 week sprints.
• Use Azure Dev Ops for workflow.
• User Claude or Cursor to assist in writing code, solving problems, and reviewing work.
• SQL Server administration – roles, users, schema management, backups, recovery.
• Minimal SSIS/SSRS work.
• Analyze telematics and safety data to provide actionable insights to customers.
• Maintain and help improve web, console, and API based solutions using appropriate languages while helping to drive the improvement of internal coding standards and best practices.
• Write software to integrate complex data from external APIs/sources.
• Ensure the robustness, performance, and failure characteristics of the system.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Exceptional Microsoft SQL Server skills, including table design, advanced stored procedure development, data warehousing, SQL Server Agent jobs, database tuning, and performance management for large datasets exceeding 300 million rows across multiple database servers and databases. 
• Must be able to solve complex SQL and data analysis problems by working from raw data to identify meaning, patterns, metrics, summary information, and data-quality issues, while also being able to debug stored procedures, analyze execution plans, and communicate findings clearly.

• Must be knowledgeable about Database Projects and Data-tier Application Packages (DACPACs) for SQL source control and deployment.

• Must be a self-starter who can independently investigate unfamiliar systems, prioritize the next useful step, document findings, and communicate blockers clearly without requiring step-by-step direction.
• Exceptional problem solving & debugging skills.
• Good object-oriented programming skills
• Familiarity with the consumption and presentation of API data
• Strong analytical and documentation skills
• N-tier design and programming
• Exposure to big data/large language models a plus
• React experience a plus

What are we looking for

• Bachelor’s degree in CS, MIS or CIS or related field or equivalent job-related experience.
• 7+ years of primarily T-SQL focused experience in production SQL Server environments.
• 3+ years of C# experience, with the ability to make targeted changes in applications, services, APIs, or console processes that interact with SQL Server data.
• 1+ years .NET 6+ or later.
• 1+ years in an Agile environment
• 1+ years Azure Dev Ops using Git.
• Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Cursor, Claude, GitHub Copilot, or similar tools to assist with coding, troubleshooting, documentation, or code review is preferred.
• SQL Server administration experience, including roles, users, schema management, backups, and recovery.
• Experience working with telematics, CAN bus, or other complex data
• Experience supporting SQL Server production environments with large datasets exceeding 300 million rows, multiple database servers/databases, and SQL Server Agent jobs.
• Experience designing, maintaining, debugging, analyzing, and improving complex SQL and data solutions for production systems.
• Experience with Database Projects and Data-tier Application Packages (DACPACs) for SQL source control and deployment.
• Experience building or supporting data integration applications that move, transform, or reconcile data from external APIs or source systems.
• Limited SSRS and SSIS experience preferred.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position which will typically involve 40 hours a week Monday through Friday but are subject to change at the company’s discretion.

Travel

Two trips annually to the corporate office in Scottsdale, AZ of approximately 5 days each may be required along with quarterly 1-day events.  Otherwise, little to no travel is expected for this position.

Compensation details

The potential salary range for this role is $125,000 to $150,000 per year, with eligibility for bonus or merit program. Final compensation will be based on experience, skills, market conditions, and internal equity.
