Senior Software Engineer

Our client is seeking a remote Senior Software Engineer to design, develop, integrate, and modernize cloud-based software supporting scientific and data-intensive applications.

This is a hands-on engineering position for someone who is strongest in Python and cloud-native development, ideally within AWS. The Senior Software Engineer will build applications, APIs, automated processing workflows, and containerized services that process and move complex data through scalable cloud environments.

The right person is not simply a cloud engineer or DevOps specialist. You should be an experienced software developer who can take complex technical or scientific requirements, translate them into working software, and remain involved from architecture and development through integration, testing, deployment, and production support.

What You Will Do

• Design, develop, test, and maintain Python-based applications and services supporting scientific, technical, and data-processing workloads.
• Build and integrate cloud-native applications within AWS environments.
• Develop APIs, services, integrations, and automated workflows that connect applications, datasets, and cloud platforms.
• Design software for processing, transforming, validating, and distributing large or complex datasets.
• Build and maintain containerized workloads using technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
• Develop automation that improves processing efficiency, repeatability, deployment, and system reliability.
• Integrate applications with cloud storage, databases, APIs, messaging services, and other platform components.
• Support application modernization and migration from legacy or on-premises environments into cloud-native architectures.
• Troubleshoot complex application, integration, data-processing, and deployment issues.
• Participate in software architecture, design reviews, code reviews, testing, and technical documentation.
• Collaborate with scientists, data engineers, cloud architects, platform engineers, and other technical stakeholders.
• Support CI/CD and automated deployment practices for cloud applications.
• Improve application performance, scalability, resilience, security, and maintainability.

What You Will Bring

Required Qualifications

• 8+ years of professional software engineering or application development experience.
• Advanced hands-on development experience with Python.
• Experience designing and developing production applications in cloud environments.
• Hands-on experience with AWS or another major cloud platform.
• Experience developing APIs, application integrations, and automated processing workflows.
• Experience developing and deploying containerized applications using Docker and/or Kubernetes.
• Experience working with data-intensive applications, processing pipelines, or complex technical datasets.
• Strong understanding of software engineering fundamentals, testing, version control, and modern development practices.
• Experience troubleshooting production software and integration issues.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.
• Must be able to hold a secuirty clearance 

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience supporting scientific, environmental, geospatial, Earth science, research, or other technical data environments.
• Experience with AWS services such as S3, Lambda, ECS, EKS, EC2, API Gateway, Step Functions, or related services.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated application deployment.
• Experience with infrastructure automation or Infrastructure as Code.
• Experience modernizing legacy scientific or data-processing applications.
• Experience working in federal government or government-contractor environments
