Role Overview
We're seeking an experienced Senior Product Designer to shape how users interact with complex geospatial data and wildfire and extreme weather risk analytics. In this role, you will lead the design of intuitive interfaces that transform massive datasets and sophisticated modeling into actionable insights. You'll play a critical role in ensuring that utility operators, incident meteorologists, planners, and emergency managers can make rapid, informed decisions when lives and property are at stake.
This position involves close collaboration with product managers, engineers, scientists, and domain experts to create user experiences that make advanced wildfire science and weather accessible to users with varying technical backgrounds.
Work Environment & Culture
This is a fast-paced, delivery-focused role with a high degree of independence. You'll be a key part of a cross-functional product team and will work directly with senior product, engineering, and science leaders. You’ll collaborate with designers embedded on other product teams and work to define and advance design as a function within the company.
Responsibilities
Design & Delivery
- Lead the end-to-end design process for complex, high impact features
- Deliver quality designs at speed, supported by AI tools such as Claude and Lovable
- Create intuitive interfaces that turn large, complex datasets into clear answers that drive high-stakes decisions
- Present large volumes of predictive data without overwhelming users
- Develop and maintain design systems that ensure consistency across the product suite, collaborating with other designers on design systems and best practices
- Refine designs using design best practices
- Translate complex user workflows into crisp digital experiences
- Lead design reviews and collaborate with cross-functional teams
- Influence the product roadmap through design insight and user advocacy
User Research & Strategy
- Plan and conduct user research with diverse stakeholders
- Create user journey maps, personas, and scenarios specific to wildfire and extreme weather risk mitigation contexts (both short-term and long-term planning)
- Present ideas to and take feedback directly from customers
- Partner with Customer Success to understand user pain points and iterate on solutions
- Establish UX metrics and measurement frameworks to track design effectiveness
AI Integration & Operational Efficiency
- Use AI to streamline repetitive tasks and free up time for higher-value design
- Enable non-designers to leverage AI-powered prototyping and design tools to accelerate iteration and discovery
- Jointly explore with your teammates how AI is changing the overall product development process
Leadership & Stakeholder Partnership
- Shape the UX vision and approach for the products you own
- Collaborate with other designers to evolve design patterns and best practices
- Partner with product and engineering leaders to align design work with business goals
- Present designs clearly to senior stakeholders, including C-level executives
Data Visualization & Geospatial Design
- Design innovative ways to display multi-layered geospatial information including fire behavior, weather patterns, and infrastructure data
- Create information-dense interfaces that simplify decision-making
- Develop visualization standards for temporal data showing fire progression and risk evolution
- Design dashboards that synthesize complex analytics into clear, actionable insights
Requirements
- 8+ years of experience as a Product or UX Designer, with substantial time in a senior or lead role
- Experience designing geospatial interfaces, mapping applications, or GIS-based systems
- Mastery of Figma (required), with hands-on experience using Jira and AI-powered design tools like Lovable, Claude Design, or similar. Proficiency with prototyping tools and rapid iteration workflows.
- Proven ability to simplify complex data and workflows into intuitive user experiences
- Primary expertise in Product Design (UX/UI/prototyping) with secondary strengths in research, information architecture, and front-end code
- Experience with utility, energy, GIS, or other complex enterprise environments
- Strong portfolio demonstrating expertise in data visualization and complex information architecture
- Strong communication skills with the ability to present design decisions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
Preferred Skills
- Background in GIS, cartography, or geospatial data visualization. Experience with modern GIS platforms (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, Mapbox, or similar).
- Familiarity with environmental science, meteorology, or fire behavior concepts
- Knowledge of accessibility standards for government and enterprise software
- Experience with design systems and component libraries
- Experience with mobile design
- Background collaborating with engineers and data scientists in complex, data-dense environments
- Eastern Time Zone location preferred
Why This Role Matters
