About the role:

As the Manager, Smart Manufacturing & MES Center of Excellence you will lead the global MES COE and a distributed team of MES developers supporting multiple manufacturing sites. Reporting to the Director of Manufacturing, you will manage MES strategy, governance, architecture, and deployment across the manufacturing network.

You will be the primary link between Manufacturing, Engineering, Quality, Operations, and local and global IT teams to deliver scalable digital manufacturing solutions. You will drive MES standardization, machine connectivity, industrial data integration, and operational excellence while ensuring secure, reliable, and sustainable manufacturing technology platforms.

 

You will report to the Director of Manufacturing and will be located near one of our three manufacturing sites; Columbia, SC, Blairsville, PA, or Ogden, UT as the Director of Manufacturing will expect you to visit the site. You will support this role 100% remotely aside from the travel.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop a global team of MES developers and technical specialists across multiple manufacturing sites.
  • Manage the MES Center of Excellence, including governance, standards, development practices, architecture reviews, and knowledge sharing.
  • Lead the MES roadmap, project portfolio, deployment strategy, budget inputs, resource planning, and implementation governance.
  • Partner with Manufacturing, Engineering, Quality, Automation, and IT teams to align technology initiatives with business objectives.
  • Define and govern manufacturing systems architecture, including MES, ERP integration, quality systems, industrial automation, historians, analytics, and cybersecurity.
  • Oversee MES integration with PLCs, SCADA, DCS, robotics, vision systems, test equipment, and other shop-floor technologies.
  • Define data historian and industrial data strategies, including equipment models, data quality, genealogy, traceability, and reporting standards.
  • Lead process mapping, requirements, solution design, testing, validation, deployment, training, and lifecycle management.
  • Ensure connected manufacturing solutions meet cybersecurity, reliability, scalability, and supportability requirements.
  • Manage software vendors, system integrators, and external technology partners.
  • Drive measurable improvements in OEE, throughput, quality, traceability, productivity, and manufacturing data visibility.
  • Establish long-term support, release management, continuous improvement, and technology modernization strategies.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline; advanced degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in manufacturing technology, MES, industrial automation, digital manufacturing, or related leadership roles.
  • Demonstrated experience leading distributed technical teams, software developers, engineers, or architects.
  • Proven success implementing MES solutions in multi-site manufacturing environments.
  • Strong manufacturing background with knowledge of production processes, quality systems, industrial automation, and plant operations.
  • Experience integrating MES with ERP, PLC, SCADA/DCS, data historian, and enterprise analytics platforms.
  • Working knowledge of ISA-95, IIoT architectures, OPC UA, MQTT, industrial networks, data governance, and cybersecurity principles.
  • Experience establishing governance models, architecture standards, and enterprise deployment frameworks.
  • PMP, Lean Six Sigma, ISA, MES platform, automation, or cybersecurity certifications preferred.

 

We are committed to transparency and equity in all of our people practices. The base salary range for this position, which is dependent upon experience, qualifications and skills, is estimated to be $144,000 to $180,000 per year.
