Senior EPC Substation Engineer

This role carries primary responsibility for substation physical design — yard layout, grounding, structures, foundations, and equipment arrangement — on EPC turnkey projects, while also coordinating the physical/electrical interface with Protection & Control, SCADA, and other disciplines.

Responsibilities:

• Serve as the Senior Substation Physical Engineer on medium to large, higher-complexity utility substation EPC projects, with primary ownership of outdoor substation physical design.
• Develop, review, and approve substation physical design packages, including equipment layouts, electrical plan and section drawings, grounding plans and details, conduit and cable routing, foundation layouts, steel structure arrangements, bus configurations, and material specifications.
• Perform advanced engineering calculations related to physical design — grounding analysis, conductor sizing, bus and equipment clearances, rigid and strain bus design, structure loading, and foundation requirements.
• Read, interpret, and produce the full range of substation physical drawings: one-line diagrams, plan and elevation views, equipment layouts, grounding layouts, conduit and cable trench plans, and construction details.
• Coordinate closely with Protection & Control, SCADA, Station Communications, Civil/Structural, and Transmission Line engineering to ensure an integrated, constructible design; assess how design changes in one discipline affect physical layout and drive the team toward the best overall solution.
• Lead or assist with engineering studies, site evaluations, constructability reviews, and technical design assessments.
• Prepare and oversee project deliverables: engineered drawings, design calculations, technical reports, material take-offs, project correspondence, and construction support documentation.
• Perform Quality Control reviews of physical design deliverables across small, medium, and larger projects; mentor junior engineers on QA/QC practices.
• Lead proposal development support — scope definition, drawing counts, manhour estimates, and technical input — for substation physical engineering efforts.
• Drive development and continuous improvement of physical design processes, standards, and best practices to improve project execution efficiency.
• Maintain accurate, well-organized project records, calculations, and design files.
• Provide engineering support during procurement, construction, commissioning, and field execution, including responding to RFIs, reviewing vendor drawings, and supporting field personnel.
• Develop and deliver technical presentations and mentorship/training sessions to support staff development on the team.
• Represent Leidos professionally with clients, contractors, and project stakeholders.

Required Qualifications:

• B.S. degree in an Engineering discipline from an ABET accredited university (Electrical preferred)
• 8+ years of prior relevant substation engineering experience
• Familiarity with electric infrastructure and the theories and principles involved in substation engineering.
• Experience with engineering programs and software (including SKM, ASPEN, ETAP, CDEGS, or vendor software).
• Competency in applying basic theories and principals involved in substation engineering.
• Experience with Engineering, Procurement & Construction turnkey projects for electric utilities is strongly preferred

Preferred Experience/Qualifications:

• Proficiency with Bentley ProjectWise data management system.
• Understanding of the function and application of major substation electrical and control house equipment
• Experience working on EPC projects or similar style of contracts
• Construction support experience.
• Understanding of the importance of quality and quality control in power/consulting industry.
• Ability to meet deadlines under high pressure situations.
