Job Details: Job Location: ABQ Main Office - Albuquerque, NM, Salary Range: Undisclosed, Senior Electrical Design Engineer- Renewable Energy
Every megawatt of solar and storage we build starts on an engineer's screen. Gridworks is seeking a Senior Electrical Design Engineer to lead that work, taking utility-scale PV and BESS projects from preliminary design through construction and commissioning. Join us in Albuquerque or remotely, and help power the Southwest's clean energy future.
About the Company
Established in 2014, Gridworks is a leading EPC contractor for utility-scale solar and battery storage projects. Primarily operating across the Southwest, we are expanding into other regions. With nearly 3 GW of solar and battery energy storage projects, we are well positioned for continued success in the rapidly growing clean energy sector.
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
Gridworks is seeking a Senior Electrical Design Engineer to lead electrical design for utility-scale solar and battery energy storage projects. The Senior Electrical Design Engineer owns the electrical design on assigned projects from preliminary design through issued-for-construction (IFC), works with the drafting team, and serves as Engineer of Record when required.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Design and Development
Direct development of detailed electrical drawings, including single-line and three-line diagrams, schematics, layouts, and details, with drafting team.
Design electrical systems for PV and BESS including DC and AC collection, medium-voltage collector systems, grounding, and auxiliary power, from preliminary design through 30/60/90%, IFC, and as-built.
Prepare equipment specifications to support major equipment procurement, and review vendor submittals and drawings (inverters/PCS, transformers, switchgear, cable, etc.).
Serve as Engineer of Record: seal drawings and calculations, and perform QA/QC reviews of design packages prepared by other engineers.
Engineering Analysis
Build and maintain system models using industry-standard software (ETAP, CYMCAP, WinIGS, or equivalent).
Perform and review electrical studies, including load flow, short circuit, arc flash, protection coordination, cable ampacity, grounding, and voltage drop, verifying designs against code requirements and site-specific project conditions.
Perform calculations and simulations to ensure the reliability, efficiency, and safety of electrical designs.
Evaluate and analyze electrical systems to identify areas for improvement or optimization.
Support interconnection requirements, including utility and transmission provider technical requirements, reactive power capability, and IEEE 2800 compliance.
Collaboration
Work closely with cross-functional teams including CAD technicians, project managers, construction managers, owner's engineers, and utilities to ensure seamless integration of electrical systems.
Work directly with manufacturers to clarify equipment design considerations, and coordinate with suppliers and vendors through the procurement manager on equipment selection.
Coordinate design development with other engineering disciplines to ensure compatibility of designs.
Respond to RFIs and resolve owner, utility, and third-party review comments.
Represent engineering as Engineer of Record on client, utility, and vendor calls alongside the Project Engineer.
Construction and Commissioning Support
Review factory and field test procedures and reports for electrical equipment.
Support construction and commissioning by resolving field issues and anomalies identified during testing.
Documentation
Organize project engineering documentation including design drawings, details, testing plans, and general submittals.
Ensure all designs and processes comply with relevant industry standards and regulations.
Develop or support development of Bill of Materials (BOM) for project.
Continuous Improvement
Contribute to company design standards, templates, processes, and calculation tools.
Stay current on new technologies and best practices in PV and BESS electrical design.
Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of electrical design processes.
