Overall Function

The Senior Analyst, Global Methane Research & Analytics will work with the Energy Transition team to conduct rigorous scientific or technical analysis as the foundation for energy advocacy.  Working directly with members of the science, analytics, and policy teams, the Senior Analyst will lead research and analysis forwarding the development and execution of projects, as well as managing specific tasks and projects independently.  The Senior Analyst will be responsible for employing data science analytics and intelligent analytical design to effectively address the needs of the EU and other global methane campaigns.   

  

If based in the U.S., the Senior Analyst reports to the Senior Director, Research & Analytics, Energy Transition. If based in Europe, the Senior Analyst reports to the Economist and Policy Manager, Global Methane. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform complex analyses of datasets on emissions from oil and gas and coal facilities and activity, such as the IEA Methane Tracker, data from the European Commission or specific countries, and information from other sources or stakeholders.  

  • Manage specific project tasks such as outreach to potential partners, developing work plans and timetables, identifying and procuring necessary resources, and managing project work and deliverables.  

  • Communicate project goals and results to Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) staff, companies, policymakers, environmental groups, the media and the public through reports, interviews, presentations, and other methods independently and in collaboration with others.  

  • Develop and apply appropriate means for evaluating the impacts of various rules and regulatory structures.  

  • Participate in advancing EDF’s organizational effectiveness and culture goals, so people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included and empowered to address environmental and organizational challenges in ways that align with EDF values. 

  • Analyse policy pathways and progress toward EU methane goals.  

  • Maintain, expand, and update EDF's models and databases used to evaluate the climate influence of natural gas leakage and mitigation scenarios.  

  • Analyse regulatory proposals and perform comparative analysis of existing regulations from various jurisdictions.  

  • Develop analytics in support of regulatory advocacy, including recommended control strategies, emission reduction efficacy and cost benefit analyses.  

  • Develop reports, factsheets, and blog posts for general audiences on the topics of focus.  

  • Research methane abatement technologies, their costs and optimal uses.  

  • Perform literature reviews and research, analyzing and synthesising information on a variety of topics to inform and support EDF's oil and gas advocacy efforts.  

  • Be the technical or scientific lead in compiling and keeping current with scientific and gray literature on methane and other air emissions from natural gas systems; synthesise and disseminate that information for EDF scientists, economists, attorneys, and policy specialists and present analytical material at EDF meetings, external events, etc.  

  • Represent EDF alongside senior policy staff in meetings with regulators, industry representatives, NGO partners and other stakeholders.  

  • Support other "rapid response" and project development efforts on an as-needed basis.  

  • Prepare correspondence and reports, respond to requests for information, and help to coordinate activities among staff members.  

  • Support with EU specific projects or tasks, such as EU methane rule analysis and performance standards and imports standards analysis.  

  • Additional relevant responsibilities as assigned. 

Qualifications

  • 4+ years' work experience in environmental science, energy policy, policy analysis, environmental advocacy, or related fields and a Bachelor’s degree required. A Master’s degree in the natural sciences, engineering or environmental science preferred and may substitute for up to 2 years of relevant experience. 

  • Strong quantitative analysis skills and strong computer efficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), with experience in performing rigorous analysis in support of highly visible work.  

  • Knowledge about environmental issues associated with the oil and gas industry and/or experience with air emissions issues or data.  

  • Familiarity with EU regulatory frameworks and processes.  

  • Exceptional personal organisation, attention to detail, and ability to multitask.  

  • Ability to work independently and to support a multi-disciplinary team, using independent judgement required to plan, prioritise, and organise diversified workload.  

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, ability to summarise and translate scientific information appropriately for a variety of audiences, from senior scientists to the lay public.  

  • Demonstrated ability to work well both independently and as a team member with colleagues spread across multiple time zones.  

  • Demonstrated ability to creatively solve problems and manage complex projects involving contractors and multiple partners within the public, private and NGO sectors.  

  • Demonstrated self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across all cultures and backgrounds.  

  • Experience with a database software, geo-spatial analysis using ArcGIS and advanced knowledge of Excel preferred. 

  • Programming proficiency required (e.g., R, Python, Matlab, SQL). Experience and preferably advanced knowledge of Python a plus.  

  • Proficiency in statistical analysis and/or air dispersion modeling a plus.  

  • Fluency in English required, proficiency in another European language a plus.
