QA Automation engineer
Department: Engineering
Employment Type: Full Time
Location: Croatia
Reporting To: Patrick Schmid
Compensation: $5,500 - $6,000 / month
Description
Newfire partners with leading global companies to drive long-term engineering transformations. On this project, we are working alongside a well-established company in the luxury retail industry undergoing a major technology shift across their digital ecosystem—including a custom e-commerce platform, multiple online storefronts, and ERP integrations. The objective is to modernize the platform and accelerate software delivery, taking release cycles from several months down to about one month.
Faster, high-confidence testing is central to this effort. Development on this project is AI-native, utilizing agentic development tools like Claude Code and CodeRabbit, with AI-assisted testing serving as a core mechanism to maximize test coverage efficiently.
About the Role
At Newfire, Quality Assistance focuses on enablement rather than serving as a downstream gatekeeper. Working under the QA Lead, you will build the frameworks, tooling, harnesses, and patterns that make it simple for every engineer to test their own work. You will extend the shared end-to-end suite across critical shopping journeys and build out automated API coverage to safeguard business operations.
Your success is measured by how effectively you enable engineers to test, rather than the number of bugs caught downstream. You will frequently map out expected feature behavior, establish documented sources of truth, and maintain test code to the same rigorous standards as production code.
What You’ll Do
- Design, extend, and maintain test frameworks, harnesses, and reusable patterns adopted across engineering pods
- Expand the shared E2E test suite covering critical shopping journeys while ensuring high reliability in CI pipelines
- Perform target regression testing prior to production deployments
- Pair directly with software engineers to elevate their unit and integration testing practices
- Leverage AI tools to accelerate test authoring, edge-case coverage, and suite maintenance
- Triage pipeline failures, isolate flaky tests, and ensure suite execution remains trusted
- Manage test data generation and test environments for owned suites
- Document testing patterns, standard practices, and feature specifications as they are established
- Participate in agile ceremonies and contribute to pull request reviews for test code
What You Bring

4+ years of professional test automation experience
- Hands-on project experience with both Cypress and Playwright (current suite uses Cypress; a migration to Playwright is under evaluation)
- Strong proficiency in JavaScript / TypeScript
- Proven experience in API test automation

-
Upper-Intermediate to Advanced English (written and spoken)
- Ability to work with significant US Eastern Time overlap (LATAM / EMEA locations)
Nice To Have
- Experience with Java test tooling (JUnit, REST-assured)
- E-commerce domain expertise (checkout, payment processing, user account journeys)
- Experience managing CI-integrated test suites and resolving test flakiness
- Exposure to performance, load, or accessibility testing
