About the Role

We are looking for a Python Team Leader to guide a team of 5–6 developers within the Odin

Development / Digital Foundation department. This is a hands-on role, you will be actively

writing and contributing to Python code alongside your team, not just managing from the

sidelines. You will also drive smooth delivery, support your team's growth, and act as a key

connector between the Python team and its closest collaborators, Admins/Ops, PHP team

leads, and project managers. You do not need to be a deep Python expert, but you must be

comfortable working in Python day to day.

Core Responsibilities

The Team Leader is expected to be an active contributor, able to write and review Python

code as part of day-to-day work.

People & Team Wellbeing

Conduct regular 1-on-1 meetings with each team member to support their growth,

address concerns, and provide constructive feedback.

Foster a psychologically safe, inclusive team culture where engineers feel heard and

valued.

Monitor team morale and workload, proactively raising concerns to leadership when

needed.

Support career development plans and learning paths for each team member.

Agile Process & Delivery

Facilitate two weekly standups, keeping them focused, time-boxed, and actionable.

Lead sprint planning sessions (held once every two weeks), collaborating with

product to define scope, estimate effort, and commit to a realistic sprint goal.

Manage and groom the Jira backlog, creating, refining, and prioritising tickets to

reflect current priorities.

Actively unblock developers facing technical, organisational, or dependency blockers,

escalating where necessary.

Track sprint progress and flag risks to delivery early.

OKRs & Strategic Alignment

Own the preparation and tracking of quarterly OKRs for the team, ensuring they align

with company-level goals.

Be accountable for reporting progress on OKRs to the Head of Odin Development at

agreed check-in points.

Translate company strategy into concrete, measurable team-level objectives each

quarter.

Hiring & Onboarding

Participate in technical interviews and assessments for new hires joining the team.

Own the onboarding process for new team members, ensuring they have the access,

context, and guidance needed to become productive. A dedicated buddy is not

required, but the Team Leader is accountable for the newcomer's successful

integration.

Cross-Team Collaboration

Act as the primary point of contact between the Python team and key stakeholders,

Admins/Ops, PHP team leads, and project managers.

Represent the team in cross-functional planning sessions and engineering

discussions.

Coordinate dependencies with other teams and surface integration risks early.

Incident Management

Act as an escalation point for production incidents involving team-owned services.

Lead blameless post-mortem sessions and ensure action items are tracked to

completion.

Technical Roadmap

Collaborate with the Senior Tech Lead to shape and maintain the technical roadmap,

contributing the Python team's perspective on priorities, capacity, and technical

direction.

Identify and advocate for tech-debt reduction initiatives and platform improvements

relevant to the team.

Requirements

Must-have

3+ years of hands-on Python development experience with a solid understanding of

how the language works, including its key patterns, ecosystem, and common use

cases. This role involves active coding, so practical, day-to-day development

experience is essential. Deep expert-level knowledge is not required, but you must be

comfortable writing and reviewing Python code regularly.

Proven experience leading or mentoring a team of software engineers.

Solid understanding of agile / scrum ceremonies and hands-on experience with Jira.

Strong communication and facilitation skills, comfortable running standups, planning

sessions, and 1-on-1s.

Track record of setting and delivering on OKRs or similar goal frameworks.

Ability to context-switch between people management and technical work.

Nice-to-have

Familiarity with languages or technologies adjacent to Python (e.g. PHP, Bash

scripting, or basic JavaScript/TypeScript).

Experience with containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes).

Background in software architecture and system design.

Admin / server knowledge: understanding of hosting environments, email

infrastructure, DNS, VPS management, and domain configuration, enough to

communicate effectively with Ops/Admin teams and reason about deployment

contexts.

AI enthusiast with a practical mindset, someone who actively follows developments

in AI tooling and can champion adoption of AI-assisted workflows within the team.

What We Offer

Competitive salary.

Flexible working arrangements (remote / hybrid options).

Additional days off on top of the standard holiday allowance.

Multisport card.

Language courses.

Learning & development budget for conferences, courses, and certifications.

A collaborative, low-ego team culture that values craft and continuous improvement.
