Camelot Energy Group (Camelot) is on a mission to power a just and sustainable society with clean energy. We are hiring a Project Engineer who thrives in a technical and market consulting environment, helping clients solve a wide range of challenges as they invest in solar, energy storage, and other clean energy technologies and projects. As part of our Technical Services department, you will help guide project developers and other clients through electrical engineering, energy storage analysis, and other clean energy project development challenges.
Camelot, founded in 2022, is a new technical and strategic advisory firm supporting asset owners and investors in the clean energy space. Our clients build, own, and operate solar and energy storage projects, and we help them by providing technical due diligence, owner’s engineering, strategic advisory, and other bespoke support. Our core values of courage, empathy, integrity, and service are at the heart of our business and support our mission of accelerating the pace of clean energy adoption to build a just and sustainable society.
Camelot’s founder, Shawn Shaw, is a 20+ year veteran of the solar and energy storage industry, with experience ranging from supporting state incentive programs to supporting some of the largest banks and financiers on their most challenging project finance transactions. Shawn has built, trained, and nurtured consulting teams throughout his career and founded Camelot to be a human-centric consultancy that values trust, flexibility, and mentorship. Shawn is supported by a robust team of industry leaders and mentors who all have 10+ years of detailed experience in the clean energy sector, from development through construction and asset management. Our leadership team boasts a collective 30 GWh of energy storage experience with a wide range of technologies and markets prior to joining Camelot.
The Camelot team has over 130 years of combined experience in the clean energy sector and has made an outsized impact on the industry for a group of our size. We have directly supported over 30 GWh of energy storage projects (both standalone and hybrid), performed M&A due diligence on over 8 GW of assets, and have seen our Independent Engineering work accepted by several US-based financial institutions. More recently, we have also begun supporting some of the most impactful public agencies and programs in the clean energy space, and our owner’s engineering team has brought over 1.5GWh of energy storage projects online in just the past few months. Our team is led by highly seasoned staff with decades of experience, and we are excited to continue growing and look forward to both mentoring and learning from each new member of the team.
The Energy Storage Development Engineer is a member of our Technical Services team who supports consulting engagements for developers, asset owners, investors, public programs, and similar entities. The role involves providing a bespoke consulting service to our clients and demonstrating experience in delivering projects, including (but not limited to):
During a typical day, the Energy Storage Development Engineer will likely perform a mix of duties that might include online meetings, reviewing electrical designs, project documentation, preparing preliminary interconnection documents, assembling client presentations, analyzing energy storage project revenue streams, assessing sites for development risks, and (of course) being sure to take some time for rest, exercise, and non-work activities. The work can be fast-paced at times, but we proactively manage our clients, project intake, workload, and staff to create a positive working environment that leads to better results.
We are seeking a team member to fill a role that blends organization and frequent client interaction with technical tasks such as analyzing project economics, design packages, technologies, and contracts. Recognizing that this is a broad skill set, we will be happy to provide the right candidate with training and support in filling gaps. However, we fundamentally seek a candidate with the following attributes:
Education: We are seeking a candidate with a 4-year degree in Electrical Engineering or a similar discipline from an accredited degree program or equivalent hands-on experience. Candidates holding a valid state license in the Northeastern United States are highly preferred.
Experience: A successful candidate will have at least 5 years of experience working in energy storage or clean energy consulting, project development, project finance, integration, applications engineering, asset management, or similar roles. Experience with hybrid solar projects is a nice-to-have. A mix of project development and engineering experience will be needed for success in this role.
Competencies: Given the varied nature of our projects and clients, we seek a candidate with the following competencies:
Inclinations: The role will involve remote work, and the majority of the tasks will be completed in an office setting, with some periodic need for fieldwork, travel for meetings or site visits (20-25% travel, varying by project phases), and similar activities. Comfort with working remotely, interacting over video conferencing platforms, and operating independently will be necessary. This role will also require flexibility in switching between tasks and priorities quickly. An ideal candidate will be inclined to suggest and implement new processes or services as opportunities arise.
Location: This position is open to those permanently residing in the U.S., with a preference for candidates located in the Northeast who hold a state license in that region. This allows for smooth teamwork with the current team and enables occasional travel to project sites in the United States and Canada when necessary. Otherwise work location is remote and completely flexible.
Sponsorship: Camelot values diversity, and we are open to sponsoring qualified individuals on a case-by-case basis.
Note: Even if you do not meet every single qualification, we encourage you to apply. We value potential and are committed to supporting your development. We are also glad to consider applicants who bring additional seniority and experience to the role. While this is not an executive-level position, we do support the growth of all our team members and would be glad to explore this role as part of a career projection for the right candidate.
Camelot is not a typical consulting firm. We are looking for great people, and we strongly believe that the main job of our leadership team is to bring in great people, support them, and then get obstacles out of their way. We reject the notion that consulting has to mean unending long days, 24/7 responsiveness, or pointless metrics. Our goal is that you enjoy your work and have a chance to make a real impact on solving the world’s energy challenges with a minimum of pointless activity during your typical day.
Reporting: This position will report to the Director of Technical Services, but we expect significant communication with a variety of junior and senior staff.
Salary: The salary range for this position is $110,000-$130,000 per year. Yes, we put that in the job description. We do this because we dislike haggling over salary as much as you do and because we believe in transparency. For the right candidate who is more (or less) experienced than noted above, we will consider an adjusted salary that reflects your experience.
Annual Incentive: The position will be eligible to participate in Camelot’s Incentive Program, which includes, subject to company and personal performance:
Health Benefits: We offer a selection of health, dental, and vision plans from which you can choose. We also offer access to and encourage the use of virtual/online mental healthcare services. Camelot provides each eligible employee with a stipend of up to $1,200 per month ($600 per pay period) towards insurance premiums, including health, dental, and vision plans. Employees may apply this stipend towards their selected plans, with this amount selected to generally cover typical premiums for a single person’s health, dental, and vision plans.
Please note that you will be eligible to sign up for insurance upon your start date, and TriNet provides a 30-day window in which you can select your chosen coverage. As long as coverage is selected in this 30-day window, your coverage effective date is either:
Insurance information, such as would normally be found on a physical insurance card, will be available in your TriNet dashboard shortly after enrolling.
TriNet “Enrich” Benefits: Camelot has subscribed to a suite of benefits from TriNet known as “Enrich”. This suite includes Enrich Access, Enrich Adopt, Enrich Disaster Relief, and Enrich Learn. Each benefit is described generally below, but please reference the Enrich documents at TriNet for the more formal description and instructions for accessing these benefits.
Support for Reproductive Healthcare (Enrich Access Program): At Camelot, we acknowledge the fundamental right of our team members to make healthcare choices that align with their personal values and medical needs. As some states where our employees reside may elect to restrict or limit access to certain reproductive health options, including access to abortions, contraceptives, or related services, Camelot will provide financial support to employees wishing to seek such services in other locations. This support includes time off as reasonably required to attend relevant treatments, and financial reimbursement up to $1,950 (pre-tax) per calendar year to cover out-of-pocket costs associated with travel needed to receive treatments. For the avoidance of doubt, it is our firm belief that these services should be available to all who need them, and this policy aims to reduce the burden on those who are forced to seek such treatments outside their state of residence. Furthermore, this benefit extends to employee dependents, spouses, and domestic partners (of any gender).
Adoption Incentive (Enrich Adopt Program):
Employees may receive up to $5,000 per tax year related to one adoption to reimburse eligible expenses such as agency fees, legal fees, or travel expenses.
Disaster Relief (Enrich Disaster Relief Program):
Employees may receive up to $1,000 per year to cover disaster relief-related expenses not already covered by relevant insurance. Camelot will provide this benefit to employees in the order applications are received, up to a maximum of $5,000 per year, company-wide limit.
Tuition Reimbursement (Enrich Learn Program):
Employees may receive reimbursement for qualifying educational expenses related to attending courses. While this may mean pursuing an advanced degree, employees may receive reimbursement for courses taken outside a formal degree program. Moreover, this benefit also covers materials and fees associated with such courses, as well as the tuition itself. Please refer to the documents at TriNet for a full summary of eligible expenses.
Note also that some loan payments may be eligible for this benefit. In this way, employees may receive this benefit over several years to cover a higher-cost educational program more fully.
The maximum benefit for this program is set at the IRS limit of $5,250 per year.
Life and Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance: Though we hope never to need it, we provide each employee with a small life/AD&D insurance policy at no cost. This policy has a value of $50,000. Employees may purchase additional coverage if desired.
Retirement Benefits: We offer a competitive 401(k) program via Empower, which is integrated with our TriNet platform. Empower offers a range of investment options, and Camelot provides 100% matching contributions up to 4% of employee salary. There is a small annual service fee of $63 that each employee will have deducted from their paychecks for Empower. (Please note that if the maximum allowable yearly contribution is selected, Empower automatically assumes you mean 100% of your paycheck and will contribute that amount until the maximum is reached.)
PTO: We believe that overly managed schedules are a painful part of business and an unnecessary one. We offer our team members unlimited PTO and, in fact, require that all team members take a minimum of two weeks’ PTO per year. Rest and recreation are key to well-being and, selfishly, to your job performance. We trust our team members to balance their work priorities with time off, and we offer as much flexibility as we can in setting work schedules with everyone. Parental leave is also supported under our unlimited PTO policy and handled on a case-by-case basis. We do ask that employees enjoy this benefit responsibly and work closely with their manager and colleagues to ensure that time taken does not negatively impact the business and our clients.
Holidays: In addition to offering all members of our team unlimited PTO, Camelot closes business on the following U.S. Federal Holidays:
Note that Camelot enthusiastically supports folks of all faiths, religions, and creeds and allows our team to swap out religious federal holidays with their religious (or non-religious) holidays of choice, where relevant.
Connectivity Stipend: All full-time personnel will receive a monthly non-taxable stipend of $150 added to their pay. The stipend is intended to partly offset costs associated with internet connection, cell phone, or similar items. We understand that employees will generally have these services whether they work here or not. However, we also recognize that there may be additional costs associated with using such services for business purposes.
Office Supplies Stipend: As part of onboarding, full-time employees will be equipped with a laptop and the following accessories as required: up to two 27” external monitors, Bluetooth trackpad or mouse, external keyboard, monitor stand, and docking station. Additionally, all full-time personnel are given an allowance of $300 per year, available in the first year of employment, for any other major office supplies. These funds can be used to purchase office decorations, supplies, furniture, or anything else reasonably required to make your working space more comfortable.
Travel Services Reimbursement: Travel can be stressful, whether for business or personal reasons. All Camelot team members who wish to obtain TSA PreCheck status will be eligible to have the associated registration fee(s) reimbursed. The reimbursement includes both the initial fees and any fees associated with renewing this service that are incurred while employed at Camelot, even if you rarely travel on company business. Equivalent services, such as Global Entry, may receive partial reimbursement up to the current cost of TSA PreCheck. We cannot make visiting airports any more pleasant, but if we can help our team members spend less time in security lines, we are happy to do so.
Professional Development: We strongly believe in supporting the growth of our people as they build expertise in the clean energy industry. As such, Camelot will provide the following Professional Development benefits:
In addition, from time to time, Camelot may offer employees additional training opportunities, and employees are encouraged to request additional training that they feel is relevant and useful. Such additional training will be at the discretion of the management team and based on relevant business priorities at that time.
Our access to the Trinet platform offers a range of elective benefits that employees may enroll in, if desired. These include:
Putting Our Money Where Our Mouth Is: We work in a clean energy space and are trying to build a better world. Our benefits should reflect that. We offer each team member:
Employees may receive “one-time” benefits no more frequently than once every five (5) calendar years of continuous service.
