Principal Software Engineer – GIS & Spectrum Interface
Compensation: $130,000 to $225,000 depending on your skills and years of experience.
Location: Remote - Up to 25% travel and the ability to travel to Maine as needed

The Principal Software Engineer – GIS & Spectrum Interface provides software engineering, GIS programming, Spectrum modeling, application development, system integration, and operational support for SGC Power's utility technology projects.
This position serves as an embedded technical resource working closely with utility engineering, GIS, EMS/SCADA, Energy Control Center, IT, and project personnel. The role focuses on developing and enhancing applications that integrate GIS data with Siemens Spectrum and related utility systems, with an emphasis on performance, reliability, scalability, data quality, and maintainability.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Software Development
- Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain enterprise software applications.
- Develop and enhance GIS-to-Spectrum interface applications and data-processing solutions.
- Analyze technical and business requirements and translate them into effective software solutions.
- Modernize legacy applications and improve application performance, scalability, reliability, and maintainability.
- Develop database queries, procedures, and data-processing solutions using SQL Server and/or Oracle.
- Perform software testing, debugging, troubleshooting, and production support.
- Support application deployments and resolve production issues.
- Participate in technical design reviews, project meetings, software demonstrations, and Agile/Scrum activities.
GIS, Spectrum, and Utility Systems
- Develop and maintain software supporting the transfer of GIS data into Siemens Spectrum.
- Support Spectrum model development, maintenance, and data validation.
- Implement requirements related to TNA modeling, Dual Representation, Split Conductor, object naming, and object relationships.
- Modify GIS database models and support appropriate representation of distribution assets within transmission models.
- Develop data validation processes to improve model accuracy and integrity.
- Optimize software procedures to reduce model update and processing times.
- Improve the alignment of SCADA and TNA model updates and reduce manual intervention.
- Develop and enhance troubleshooting, logging, diagnostics, and alerting tools.
- Support Utility Network upgrade design and programming as requirements are defined.
- Provide operational and emergency support for GIS-Spectrum interface applications as required.
Documentation and Collaboration
- Develop and maintain technical, design, deployment, operational, and user documentation.
- Provide training and knowledge transfer to SGC Power and client personnel.
- Collaborate with utility engineers, GIS specialists, developers, IT personnel, Energy Control Center personnel, and project managers.
- Provide project status updates, estimates, schedules, and technical recommendations.
- Identify technical issues, risks, dependencies, and opportunities for improvement.
- Maintain strong working relationships with SGC Power and client stakeholders.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Strong experience with C# and .NET development.
- Experience with ASP.NET / ASP.NET Core and web development.
- Strong SQL skills with Microsoft SQL Server and/or Oracle.
- Experience with Java, JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS.
- Strong understanding of software architecture, data structures, design patterns, and relational databases.
- Experience with Esri GIS technologies, including ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Server, or ArcGIS Enterprise.
- Experience with Esri APIs and SDKs.
- Experience integrating GIS data with enterprise or operational applications.
- Experience with Visual Studio, Git, Azure DevOps, or similar development tools.
- Experience with Agile/Scrum methodologies.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
PREFERRED UTILITY EXPERIENCE
- Siemens Spectrum, preferably Spectrum 4 or later.
- Energy Management Systems (EMS).
- SCADA systems.
- Transmission and distribution modeling.
- GIS-to-EMS or GIS-to-SCADA interfaces.
- TNA modeling.
- ArcGIS Utility Network.
- Electric utility GIS and Energy Control Center applications.
- Automated model-building and data-validation processes.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, GIS, or a related field preferred.
- Equivalent combination of education, technical training, and professional experience may be considered.
- Minimum of six (6) years of professional software development experience; additional experience preferred for principal-level responsibilities.
- Experience developing and supporting enterprise software applications.
- Experience with GIS technologies and relational databases.
- Electric utility industry experience strongly preferred.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Primarily office, client, control center, or remote work environments based on project requirements.
- Occasional travel to customer offices, Energy Control Centers, project sites, conferences, or business meetings may be required.
- Occasional field or outdoor work may be required for software testing or validation.
- Position requires extended computer use and frequent communication with coworkers, clients, and project stakeholders.
