- Combine ingenuity, in-depth research, and a spirit of collaboration with design and engineering excellence
- Advance in-vehicle infotainment, safety, efficiency, and enjoyment
About the Role
As a Principal Engineer – AI Automation, Toolchain & Compliance Engineering, you will be a senior individual contributor responsible for driving intelligent, scalable automation solutions across engineering environments. This role focuses on advanced workflow automation, AI‑assisted decision systems, and seamless toolchain integration to improve engineering efficiency and compliance outcomes. You will play a key role in shaping technical direction, setting engineering standards, and mentoring peers while remaining hands‑on in solution design and delivery. This role requires strong depth in AI‑driven automation, with 4–6 years of hands‑on experience applying AI techniques to workflow automation, decision support, and toolchain integration at enterprise scale.
What You Will Do
- Design, implement, and evolve end‑to‑end automation workflows supporting engineering and compliance processes
- Drive the adoption of AI‑assisted automation for analysis, prioritization, and decision‑support use cases
- Apply hybrid automation approaches that combine rule‑based logic, machine learning, and large language model capabilities
- Integrate automation solutions into enterprise engineering tool chains.
- Contribute to the design and evolution of internal engineering platforms (TechShelf) by translating abstract processes and standards into reusable, scalable software capabilities.
- Define and maintain standards for workflow orchestration, resiliency, error handling, and auditability
- Collaborate with solution architects, process owners, compliance, security, and global engineering teams to translate requirements into scalable automation solutions
- Participate in design reviews, code reviews, and technical governance discussions
- Mentor senior engineers and provide technical leadership in automation and AI domains
What You Need to Be Successful
- 8–12 years of experience in enterprise software engineering with strong focus on automation, workflow engineering, and toolchain integration, including 4–6 years of hands‑on experience in AI‑automation related work.
- Proven ability to design and implement complex, end‑to‑end automation workflows at scale, including orchestration across systems, dependency/state management, and robust error handling (retries, fallbacks, recovery).
- Hands‑on experience implementing or integrating AI/ML‑based automation in enterprise workflows, with exposure to classification/prioritization, decision support/recommendation systems, and LLM‑based use cases (e.g., summarization, analysis, guidance); strong understanding of hybrid approaches combining rules + AI.
- Experience building or evolving enterprise internal platforms or developer‑facing tools, with focus on reusability, extensibility, and long‑term platform sustainability.
- Experience embedding automation and AI workflows into enterprise DevOps ecosystems, with strong engineering discipline across code quality, release readiness, and operational robustness.
- Hands-on experience with Git‑based workflows and peer code reviews, along with the use of static code analysis tools, quality gates, and automated checks to ensure consistent engineering quality.
- Working knowledge of Jira and Confluence for work item tracking, documentation, and collaboration in agile engineering environments.
- Solid backend engineering experience in Java and REST‑based services; experience designing secure, scalable APIs and system‑to‑system integrations using common integration patterns (request‑response, event‑driven / pub‑sub), including versioning, resiliency, and traceability.
- Hands‑on experience with PostgreSQL/SQL and designing data schemas/persistence models that support workflow execution/state management and AI decision metadata/audit trails; strong understanding of data integrity, consistency, and traceability.
- Working knowledge of Docker, Maven, and Linux fundamentals; strong understanding of non‑functional requirements (scalability, security, reliability, maintainability, auditability) and ability to collaborate across architecture, compliance, security, and global engineering teams.
Bonus Points if You Have
- Experience with enterprise compliance or engineering productivity platforms
- Exposure to Responsible AI principles or enterprise AI governance practices
- Experience influencing technical standards beyond a single team or project
- Exposure to knowledge management concepts, reusable asset libraries, or mechanisms that enable engineering reuse and standardization at organizational scale.
- Prior experience working in large‑scale, global engineering organizations
What Makes You Eligible
- You are comfortable working with globally distributed teams and flexible time zones when required
- Proven ability to work independently in a remote setting while maintaining strong alignment with global, cross‑functional stakeholders
- Willingness to travel as necessary to support project execution, stakeholder engagement, and critical business activities
- Ability to successfully complete a background investigation
What We Offer
- Flexible work environment, allowing for full-time remote work globally for positions that can be performed outside a HARMAN or customer location
