Purpose of Position

The Department of Teaching, Leadership & Professional Practice seeks a part-time instructor to teach SPED 995 Scholarly Project in the Master of Science in Special Education program, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) specialization.


SPED 995 is a culminating graduate experience that provides students with the opportunity to integrate and apply knowledge gained throughout their graduate coursework in a meaningful, real-world context. Students demonstrate their ability to apply behavior-analytic principles, data literacy, ethical decision-making, professional writing, problem definition, and data-informed reasoning. The course is designed to support students' readiness for independent, responsible professional practice and preparation for the Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) examination.


SPED 995 is a self-paced scholarly project course. Students may complete the project over one or more semesters and pursue approved project options involving behavior-analytic content, professional learning materials, scholarly literature, and application to professional practice. The instructor provides individualized mentorship, reviews and evaluates student work, provides feedback on revisions, monitors student progress, and determines successful completion of course requirements.

Required Competencies

  • Effective teaching and mentoring ability in an online and/or asynchronous graduate-level setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of applied behavior analysis and evidence-based professional practice.
  • Ability to mentor graduate students completing independent scholarly and applied projects.
  • Ability to evaluate graduate-level scholarly and professional writing and provide timely, constructive feedback.
  • Ability to guide students in locating, evaluating, synthesizing, and applying scholarly and professional literature.
  • Ability to support students in integrating graduate coursework with behavior-analytic principles, ethical standards, and professional practice.
  • Ability to work with and engage diverse students and colleagues.
  •  Excellent organizational and time-management skills, including the ability to monitor students working at varying stages of project completion.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Commitment to ethical, professional, culturally responsive, and evidence-based practice.

Minimum Requirements

  • Master's degree in Applied Behavior Analysis, Special Education, Psychology, Education, or a closely related field.
  • Graduate-level education, training, and/or professional experience in applied behavior analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience with scholarly or professional writing, research literature, and evidence-based practice.
  • Experience working with graduate students or adult learners in an instructional, supervisory, mentoring, or professional capacity.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in Applied Behavior Analysis, Special Education, Psychology, Education, or a closely related field.
  • Current Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) or Board Certified Behavior Analyst-Doctoral (BCBA-D) credential.
  • Experience teaching graduate-level courses in applied behavior analysis, special education, or a related discipline.
  • Experience supervising master's-level scholarly projects, capstone projects, theses, or other culminating graduate experiences.
  • Experience teaching and mentoring students in an online or asynchronous learning environment, particularly using Blackboard.
  • Experience supporting students preparing for the BCBA credentialing examination.
  • Experience with the BACB Test Content Outline and Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts.
  • Professional experience applying behavior analysis in educational, clinical, community, or related settings.
  • Experience with culturally responsive practice, interdisciplinary collaboration, and/or service delivery in rural or remote settings.
