The Mid-Level SQL DBA is responsible for the daily operations, health monitoring, and maintenance of SQL Server and SQL Cluster environments. They also provide support for MySQL, MariaDB, and PostgreSQL databases while managing change requests and troubleshooting application integrations.
AET Federal is seeking a Mid-Level SQL DBA to join a four-person team supporting a federal agency's server-based applications, which run on SQL Server and Oracle databases across every business unit. The team has a Senior and a Mid-Level DBA for SQL Server and the same pair for Oracle.
The Mid-Level SQL DBA handles day-to-day SQL Server and SQL Cluster operations. That covers ServiceNow tickets, change requests, Idera and SolarWinds monitoring, and support for MySQL, MariaDB and PostgreSQL. The role reports to the Senior SQL DBA (Team Lead) and backs up that position.
Key Responsibilities
Operations, monitoring and issue triage
Run daily health checks on SQL Server instances and SQL Clusters: backups, failed jobs, cluster and availability group state, errors
Troubleshoot, set up, triage errors and configure SQL Server and SQL Cluster environments
Manage ServiceNow requests from submission to closeout
Use Idera and SolarWinds for proactive health monitoring and capacity planning, and tune alerts and dashboards
Maintenance and change management
Carry out assigned Requests for Change (RFCs), with implementation, validation and backout steps
Apply SQL Server cumulative and security updates; plan and lead patch cycles in scheduled after-hours windows
Perform routine maintenance: index and statistics upkeep, integrity checks (DBCC CHECKDB), log and storage management
Resolve ServiceNow tickets within the customer's operational SLAs
Database and application support
Help users build and configure standalone SQL Server databases
Troubleshoot SQL Server and MS Access issues and application integrations, such as SharePoint, ODBC connections, linked servers and connection strings
Support MySQL, MariaDB and PostgreSQL databases
Review and tune T-SQL queries, stored procedures and indexes
High availability and disaster recovery
Implement and test failovers for SQL Server failover clusters and Always On availability groups
Verify backups and perform restore and point-in-time recovery tests
Execute DR runbooks under the direction of the Senior SQL DBA
Reporting and collaboration
Contribute to the weekly support activity report delivered to the customer's COR
Stay available on Microsoft Teams during core hours
Cover for the Senior SQL DBA as needed
Required Qualifications
4+ years of hands-on database administration, with SQL Server as the primary platform
Experience with SQL, SQL Server and SQL Clustering (Windows Server Failover Clustering and/or Always On availability groups)
Strong SQL scripting (T-SQL) and automation skills, such as PowerShell or SQL Agent jobs
Working experience with PostgreSQL, MySQL and MariaDB
Experience troubleshooting MS Access databases
Proven ability to create and manage standalone SQL Server databases
Demonstrated experience with triage, server maintenance, software installation and patching, maintaining high-availability systems, and executing disaster recovery
Experience working tickets and change requests in ServiceNow or a comparable ITSM tool
Ability to work independently, collaborate across teams, and communicate clearly with staff and management at all levels
Willing and able to pass a federal background investigation
Able to work 8 hours per day within 7:30 AM–6:00 PM ET, with occasional scheduled after-hours work
Willing to sign a letter of commitment for this proposal
