Long-Term Substitute Pool - Pupil Personnel Services

The Long-Term Substitute Pool - Pupil Personnel Services provides full-time virtual services for the Counseling department at California Online Public Schools when school counselors are on leave. This posting is intended to establish a pool of qualified long-term substitutes who may be contacted as assignments become available; placement in the pool does not guarantee an assignment. Working from a home office, this role supports students across all grade bands by collaborating with teachers and administrators, monitoring academic progress, maintaining communication with families, and ensuring ongoing academic support. Assignments typically will be a minimum of one (1) month up to five (5) months. During the duration of an assignment the substitute teacher will be expected to work full-time (40 hours a week).

Substitutes work under the guidance of instructional leadership and collaborate closely with school teams to uphold high academic expectations and student success.This position will be open for applications from October 05, 2026, through October 12, 2026. Requirements

Essential Responsibilities

• Will require covering employee leave of absences in a variety of capacities and on-demand. 
• Provide academic, college and career, and social emotional support.
• Manage 504s for student caseload.
• Deliver counseling services in alignment with school policies, curriculum, and established lesson plans.
• Maintain a supportive online learning environment and uphold high academic expectations.
• Communicate professionally with students, staff, and administrators.
• Collaborate with departments to review data and develop strategies for student support. 
• Manage instructional programs virtually, engaging in synchronous and asynchronous counseling sessions. 
• Monitor assignment completion and provide targeted instructional feedback, strategies, and support.
• Maintain accurate attendance, documentation, and compliance records.
• Communicate frequently with students, families, and colleagues regarding academic needs, progress, and expectations.
• Consult regularly with learning coaches and students to ensure successful completion of instructional programs.
• Follow all school procedures, policies, and guidelines for online instruction.
• This is a remote position; the employee must reside in California.
• Travel may be required on occasion for in-person events within California.
• Other duties as assigned. 

Knowledge & Skills

• Strong understanding of virtual instruction, independent study, and student engagement strategies.
• Ability to deliver live online counseling sessions across assigned grade levels.
• Skilled in monitoring student progress, grading, and providing timely instructional feedback.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with students, families, staff, and administrators.
• Proficient with virtual learning platforms and school systems, including Zoom, Google Workspace, Canvas, and School Pathways.
• Ability to maintain accurate attendance, grading, documentation, and compliance records.
• Organized, flexible, and able to manage multiple responsibilities in a remote instructional setting.
• Professional, reliable, and able to maintain continuity of instruction during teacher leaves.
• Experience supporting diverse student populations in a virtual or independent study environment.

The candidate possesses extensive experience delivering virtual academic support, demonstrating excellent communication skills that facilitate effective interactions with staff, students, and caretakers. Proficient in various virtual learning platforms, including Zoom, Google Workspace, Canvas, and School Pathways, they adeptly utilize technology to enhance instructional delivery and foster student engagement. Their background includes working with diverse student populations, allowing for a deep understanding of unique educational needs. The candidate excels at managing multiple responsibilities and adapting to changing instructional demands, while maintaining strong organizational skills to ensure compliance with school procedures and guidelines. 

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

Primarily performed from a home office with reliable high-speed internet and a quiet space suitable for student video sessions. Occasional in-person attendance required for the annual Back to School Conference and other events. Extended sitting and keyboard/mouse use up to 8 hours daily; hearing, speaking, and visual acuity to engage students virtually. At in-person events: standing/walking, occasional lifting up to 20 lbs (up to 40 lbs on rare occasions), pushing/pulling not exceeding 50 lbs. Reasonable accommodations available.

Minimum Qualifications

• Valid California Clear or Preliminary Pupil Personnel Services Credential in School Counseling.
• Must currently reside in California.
• Strong communication skills and comfort with technology and virtual learning platforms.
• Previous experience teaching in a virtual or Independent Study environment.
• Experience working with diverse student populations.
• Strong communication skills and proficiency with technology and virtual learning platforms, including Zoom, Google Workspace, Canvas, and School Pathways.

Compensation

 $5858.67 per month, $500 for one week of training
