We are actively hiring for a Litigation Attorney – Of Counsel.

Your Role:

This role will be recognized as an expert within specialty; consistently handling the highest-complexity cases; influencing practice but no formal leadership. Acting as a senior individual contributor providing advanced legal expertise in property and casualty insurance defense litigation. Independently managing a portfolio of complex, high-exposure litigation matters for insureds and/or CSAA Insurance Group (CSAA IG) before courts or arbitration panels and advising company employees in their handling of claim matters. Preparing legal pleadings, motions, statements, trial briefs, and related legal documents. Negotiating settlements and will appear on behalf of CSAA IG and its insureds. Conducting all phases of personal injury litigation, including jury trials, motions, and arbitration hearings.

This individual will need to possess specialized expertise in property and casualty insurance defense, including knowledge of insurance principles and evolving legal developments impacting the insurance industry and personal injury litigation. They will also need to exercises independent judgment to resolve complex and high-exposure legal matters with limited oversight from a Managing Attorney.

The Attorney will need to demonstrates substantial trial experience and the ability to independently lead trials and arbitration proceedings, including complex and non-traditional property and casualty disputes. They may also provide guidance, coaching, and mentoring to less experienced attorneys.

Your Work:

  • Independently prepares and reviews legal pleadings, motions, briefs, discovery, and other legal filings, incorporating strategic input from Claims partners as appropriate.

  • Represents CSAA IG and its insureds in court, arbitration, and other legal proceedings; assumes full responsibility for assigned caseload, including matters of high complexity and exposure.

  • Conducts all phases of litigation, including case evaluation, discovery, depositions, motions practice, settlement negotiations, trials, arbitration hearings, and appeals.

  • Leads trial and arbitration strategy, including witness preparation, evidentiary planning, and courtroom advocacy, with minimal supervision.

  • Handles highly complex and/or specialized legal matters, including those involving non-traditional claims, emerging legal theories, or elevated financial/reputational risk.

  • Serves as a subject matter resource for Claims and Legal colleagues on litigation strategy, insurance defense practices, and legal risk considerations.

  • Anticipates legal risks and advises stakeholders on implications for litigation outcomes, reserving practices, and business operations.

  • Provides coaching, informal mentoring, and technical guidance to Attorney I and II roles to support skill development and consistency in legal practices.

  • Collaborates cross-functionally with Claims, HR, and other business partners to ensure alignment on litigation strategy and risk management.

Required Experience, Education and Skills

  • 10+ years litigation experience in insurance defense practice with considerable courtroom and first-chair trial experience

  • Demonstrated experience independently handling complex litigation matters from inception through trial or resolution.

  • Advanced degree in related area that requires law degree and passing of bar exam

  • Certification(s) and/or license(s) in functional area and License from state of practice required

  • Deep expertise in property and casualty insurance defense and personal injury litigation.

  • Advanced trial advocacy skills, including demonstrated ability to independently lead complex jury trials and arbitration proceedings.

  • Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize complex legal issues into clear, actionable strategies.

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion in handling sensitive, high-risk, and high-exposure matters.

  • Strong negotiation skills with a demonstrated ability to achieve favorable settlement outcomes.

  • Knowledge of applicable state and federal laws, procedural rules, and regulatory requirements.

  • Ability to manage a high-volume caseload with competing priorities while maintaining quality and timeliness.

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to influence stakeholders and represent the organization in adversarial proceedings.

  • Capability to mentor and develop less experienced attorneys without formal supervisory responsibility.
