Position Summary

About the Role

We are seeking a Lead Architect to drive architecture for Aetna Digital’s member-facing web and mobile platforms, supporting key healthcare domains such as Claims, Spending, Benefits, Secure Messaging, Live Chat, and ID Cards. This role is a critical bridge between strategy and execution.

As a Lead Architect, you will:

  • Own one to two domains deeply (e.g., Claims, Benefits, Messaging), acting as the primary technical authority
  • Support multiple domains broadly, partnering with other architects and SMEs
  • Drive both feature-level solutioning and long-term domain strategy (“north star”)
  • Ensure systems scale across client (web/mobile), API, and backend service layers

You will partner closely with Product, Engineering, Architecture, Security, and external teams to deliver scalable, compliant, and high-quality solutions on AWS-based platforms.

*This position can work remotely anywhere in the continental USA or hybrid at multiple CVS Health locations nationally.

What You’ll Do

You will own the architecture for one or more core healthcare domains, driving both near-term feature delivery and long-term technical direction. This includes designing end-to-end solutions across web, mobile, APIs, and backend services, ensuring they are scalable, secure, and aligned with platform standards.

You’ll partner closely with product, engineering, and cross-functional teams to shape solutions, guide implementation, and support teams through integration and production readiness. You’ll also help evaluate emerging technologies—such as AI/LLM-based solutions—while ensuring privacy, compliance, and operational excellence.  Design integration strategies between modern cloud-native services and legacy core systems

Beyond delivery, you’ll contribute to raising the architecture bar by defining best practices, mentoring teams, and helping drive consistency and quality across the organization.

What Makes You Successful in This Role

Successful candidates bring a strong sense of ownership and the ability to drive architecture end-to-end within a domain, balancing immediate delivery needs with long-term scalability and system health. You’re a strong communicator who can translate complex technical concepts into clear decisions for both engineering and business partners.

You collaborate effectively across teams, build trust quickly, and are comfortable working in ambiguous environments where alignment must be driven—not assumed. You approach problems with a business mindset, considering member experience, cost, and risk alongside technical design.

You’re also proactive in identifying gaps, improving systems, and mentoring others—raising not only the quality of your own work, but the capabilities of the teams around you.  You take ownership without waiting to be asked, and demonstrate intellectual curiosity.  You are a patient teacher, sharing knowledge and carefully considering feedback and bring others along.

Required Qualifications

  • 8–12+ years of software engineering and architecture experience
  • 5+ years in solution or domain architecture roles
  • Strong experience with:
    • Distributed systems and API-driven architectures
    • Cloud platforms (AWS preferred)
    • Microservices and integration patterns
  • Experience supporting consumer-facing web/mobile platforms
    • Experience with modern frontend web architecture patterns and frameworks
    • Experience with mobile application architecture patterns (iOS/Android)
  • Strong understanding of:
    • System design tradeoffs (performance, scale, resiliency)
    • Security and compliance (PII/PHI, HIPAA)
  • Proven ability to lead cross-team technical initiatives
  • Experience in healthcare or regulated domains
  • Strong documentation and architecture artifact creation experience
  • Experience with API specification standards (OpenAPI)
  • Strong experience with event-driven architectures (Kafka, CDC patterns)
  • Experience with data integration patterns across legacy and modern systems
  • Experience with full stack architecture solutions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in one or more of: Claims, Benefits, Accumulators, Messaging/Chat
  • Familiarity with API gateway patterns, caching strategies, event-driven systems
  • Experience evaluating or implementing AI/LLM solutions (e.g., Bedrock, model integrations)
  • Experience with NoSQL datbases (MongoDB, DocumentDB, etc)
  • Experience with caching strategies

Education: Bachelor’s degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering or related field required.
