They provide technical leadership, mentorship to engineering staff, and coordinate across departments to drive innovation and operational efficiency.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

As a Lead Program Engineer within the Major Projects Group, you'll serve as a recognized technical leader within the Major Projects Group, driving design quality, consistency, and innovation across concurrent projects spanning the wind, solar, battery energy storage (BESS), and gas business unit segments. The Lead Program Engineer supports cross-department standards and initiatives, and prioritizes “We over Me”, placing collective success and team development above individual contribution. The Lead Program Engineer may lead a team of Project Engineers, Engineer I/II staff, and CAD Designers, providing technical direction, mentorship, and professional development.

STEP INTO THE ROLE

  • Leads the project engineering lifecycle from project award through design delivery, construction support, and closeout, with emphasis on schedule conformance and financial impact at each phase.
  • Serves as the lead engineering point of contact to Owners and Engineer of Record (EOR) teams on submittal milestones, review timelines, procurement deliverables, page turns, and Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) outreach.
  • Ensures designs satisfy the facility's design requirements through compliance with local, state, and national codes, owner contracts, and company best practices. Champions a quality-first culture across the team.
  • Owns Basis of Design (BOD) development and RFI management for assigned projects and disciplines across wind, solar, BESS, and gas scopes.
  • Performs drawing and design reviews to ensure designs meet industry standards, Blattner's best practices and standards, and support safe work practices in the field.
  • Validates equipment and material quantity takeoffs; ensures accuracy and completeness before submission.
  • Coordinates with other engineers and discipline leads to establish design schedules, resource plans, and cross-discipline coordination across the project portfolio.
  • Performs contract and subcontract reviews and provides technical recommendations. Escalates high-risk issues to Senio Manager and Director leadership as appropriate.
  • Leads coordination with Integrated Supply Chain (ISC), Estimating, and Construction teams on equipment and material selection, vetting, and approval.
  • Supports project man-camp siting and development.
  • Partners with construction management teams to facilitate design understanding as construction commences; ensures field teams have the plans, quantities, and parameters needed to build.
  • Collaborates across company departments, vendors, and outside engineering firms to explore innovative ideas, methods, materials, and technologies that promote safety, lower cost, and increase efficiency.
  • Champions change management discipline — ensures scope changes, quantity changes, and design deviations are clearly documented, communicated through change narratives, and resolved at the appropriate level.
  • Leads formal lessons learned sessions; ensures findings are documented, distributed, and incorporated into future project work to continuously improve design quality.
  • Mentors, trains, and onboards Senior Engineers and Engineer I/II staff; builds skill sets through deliberate coaching, feedback, career development conversations, and work product review.
  • Supports managers with hiring and promotion decisions by participating in interviews and assessing talent.
  • Drives consistency in designs across multiple projects; works with the team to establish and enforce standard design approaches and details applicable across the portfolio.
  • Identifies and leads department initiatives to enhance processes, standards, and cross-functional collaboration. Sets goals and works with direct reports through the goal-setting process.
  • Performs in-depth constructability assessments on complex projects.
  • Communicates deliberately, intentionally, and purposefully in leadership, management, and technical spaces — with Owners, EOR teams, project engineering staff, and other internal stakeholders across all phases of work.
  • Adheres to the company's cultural basics and the National Society of Professional Engineers' code of conduct. Solves problems using factual evidence and sustainable solutions that are safe, transparent, and documentable.
  • Assists with special projects and performs other duties per supervisor's discretion.
