AI Summary

Lead technical power system studies including load flow, short circuit, and transient analysis while ensuring high-quality, client-ready deliverables. Mentor junior engineers and serve as the primary technical subject-matter expert in client meetings and project coordination.

About INS Engineering

Founded in 2018 and headquartered in Austin, Texas, INS Engineering is a privately held power systems engineering firm with offices in Houston and Albany, New York. We help utilities, developers, grid operators and data center teams connect new generation, energy storage and large loads to the grid, from studies through commissioning, across all major U.S. power markets.

Our work has supported projects like a 400 MW / 1 GWh battery storage facility in Texas and a 100 MW solar project in Ohio. We’re a growing, remote team that regularly gets together in person, guided by three values: Reliability, Innovation and Commitment. Our senior engineers mentor the next generation, and we stay with clients from kickoff to commissioning.

The Role INS is expanding its technical leadership in power system studies across renewable generation, utility interconnection, collector systems and large-load infrastructure. We're looking for an engineer who enjoys personally executing studies and owning the quality of complex client deliverables.

As our Lead Power System Studies Engineer, you'll combine hands-on analysis with technical leadership: leading multiple projects, independently reviewing models and reports, mentoring engineers, and communicating recommendations directly to clients and project managers.

What You'll Do

Lead technical studies

  • Personally execute and review load flow, short circuit, reactive compensation, arc flash, grounding, cable ampacity, harmonic and coordination studies.
  • Lead transient studies as projects require, including EMT, TOV/TRV, insulation coordination and transformer energization.
  • Choose the right engineering platforms and document modeling assumptions, scenarios, calculations, results and mitigation recommendations.

Deliver project quality

  • Lead studies for solar PV, BESS, wind, utility interconnection, high-voltage substations and collector systems.
  • Perform independent QA/QC so reports are reproducible, defensible and client-ready.
  • Coordinate study interfaces, technical risks, priorities and deadlines with project managers and distributed teams.

Lead clients and people

  • Serve as the technical subject-matter expert in client meetings, explaining findings and recommended solutions.
  • Mentor study engineers and review their calculations and technical reports.
  • Support technical proposals, execution plans and engineering issue resolution.

What You Bring

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.
  • Recent, deep hands-on experience across power system studies, especially steady-state load flow, short circuit and reactive compensation, plus arc flash, grounding, ampacity, harmonics and transient studies.
  • Utility, renewable, developer or interconnection project experience, including client-ready technical reports.
  • Ability to lead technical work, mentor engineers, perform QA/QC and present to clients independently.

Nice to have

  • About 8–12 years of relevant study experience; recent, hands-on depth matters more than tenure.
  • A mix of steady-state and EMT/transient studies, ideally on renewable or large-load projects.
  • Consulting or EPC background and experience in one or more ISO/RTO markets.

Tools you'll use ETAP, SKM, ASPEN, PSCAD, PSS®E, PSLF, CDEGS or equivalent, depending on the study.

Don't check every box? If you meet most of the requirements and this role excites you, we encourage you to apply.

What Success Looks Like

  • First 30 days: You've met the studies team and the project managers you'll support, learned INS's study methodology, model conventions and QA/QC checklists, and started reviewing models on active solar, BESS and interconnection projects.
  • 60 days: You're personally running load flow, short circuit and reactive compensation analyses on live projects, choosing the right platform for each study, and joining client calls to walk through findings.
  • 90 days: You've mapped your assigned study deliverables, tools, client standards and QA/QC requirements, and you've delivered your first client-ready study reports as technical lead.
  • 6 months: You own and deliver multiple studies, technical reviews and client presentations while mentoring junior engineers.
  • 12 months: You're a dependable technical lead for high-value power system studies and have improved repeatable delivery practices.

Where You'll Work This is a remote role based in the United States. You'll collaborate with INS engineering and client teams across locations, with occasional project- and client-dependent travel.

Life at INS We hire good people, give them the tools and support they need, and trust them to do great work, with no micromanagement. Your ideas are heard and your contributions are recognized. We work remotely and make time to reconnect in person at team gatherings, where families are welcome too. You'll work alongside experienced Ph.D. and P.E. engineers who invest in mentorship, training and knowledge-sharing, and as INS grows, there's real room to grow with the company.

Compensation Annual bonus opportunities may be available, subject to plan terms. The final offer will depend on your experience, skills and location
