YOUR MISSION

Are you experienced in development baseline CM, software CM or both, and interested in contributing to complex engineering projects in the space sector?

We are building our community of Configuration Management Engineers to support space systems engineering, satellite ground segments and related software environments. Depending on your expertise and project needs, assignments may focus on either specialism or span both. The responsibilities below distinguish the core CM activities from those specific to each area.

Core CM Responsibilities

• Coordinating configuration change requests, including impact assessments, reviews, approvals and implementation follow-up.

• Maintaining configuration status records to ensure the traceability, consistency and integrity of controlled information and baselines.

• Supporting Configuration Control Boards (CCBs), configuration reviews and configuration audits.

• Coordinating with engineering, quality assurance, integration, verification and validation, operations and project management teams to ensure effective configuration control.

• Supporting the preparation and maintenance of Configuration Management Plans, procedures and reports appropriate to the assigned scope.

• Collect KPIs and provide reports to management.

• Contributing to the continuous improvement of configuration management processes and practices.

Development baseline CM - Specific Responsibilities

Focus: Controlling the approved engineering definition and configuration of the system throughout development and integration.

• Establishing and maintaining development baselines and configuration item identification for space systems, subsystems and ground segment infrastructure.

• Ensuring that requirements, design documentation, interface definitions and verification evidence remain aligned with approved development baselines.

• Controlling the engineering definition of hardware, system interfaces and infrastructure, including maintaining controlled engineering document repositories, technical registers and baseline documentation for project reviews and deliveries.

• Identification of software products and versions within the overall system baseline.

• Preparing configuration reports describing the as-designed/as built configurations of the system and its components, and tracking discrepancies against approved baselines.

Software CM Responsibilities

Focus: Controlling software configuration items, versions, builds, and releases throughout development, delivery, and maintenance.

• Managing software repositories and version control practices, including branching, merging, tagging and baselining for parallel development and maintenance.

• Identifying and controlling software configuration items, including source code, build scripts, dependencies, tool versions, configuration data and test assets.

• Supporting reproducible software builds and continuous integration pipelines by controlling build inputs and retaining traceable build artefacts.

• Coordinating software release identification, packaging and delivery, including release notes, version records and controlled release archives.

• Maintaining traceability between software changes and defect fixes, source code revisions, build artefacts, test results and approved releases.

• Recording as-released and as-deployed software configurations, enabling retrieval and roll-back to previous versions and providing approved release identifiers for inclusion in system development baselines.

• Preparing configuration reports describing the as-built configurations of the software and its components, and tracking discrepancies against approved baselines.

 YOUR EXPERIENCE & TALENTS

We welcome candidates specialising in development baseline CM, software CM or both. Alongside the shared qualifications and skills below, you should bring the experience relevant to your specialism; experience in both areas is not required for every assignment.

Common CM qualifications and talents

• A degree in Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, Telecommunications, Electronics, Computer Science, Software Engineering or another relevant engineering discipline.

• Professional experience in development baseline CM, software CM, or a related change management or engineering function.

• Understanding of configuration identification, change control, traceability and configuration status accounting.

• The ability to coordinate configuration activities across multidisciplinary teams and communicate technical information clearly.

• A structured approach to work, with strong attention to detail and a commitment to data integrity and process compliance.

• A good command of written and spoken English.

Development baseline CM – specific experience

• Understanding of the system development lifecycle, interface control, and as-designed/as-built configuration reporting.

• Experience identifying system configuration items and managing development baselines, engineering change requests and controlled technical documentation.

• Experience working with engineering documentation, controlled document repositories and technical data management tools.

Software CM – specific experience

• Hands-on experience with software version control tools such as Git or equivalent, including repository management, branching, merging, tagging and software baselining.

• Experience controlling software configuration items, including source code, build scripts, dependencies, tool versions, configuration data and test assets.

• Experience supporting reproducible software builds and continuous integration workflows, with traceable build inputs and retained build artefacts.

• Experience managing software release versions, packaging, release notes and controlled delivery archives, including records of as-released/as-deployed configurations.

• Understanding of the software development lifecycle and traceability between change requests or defects, code revisions, test results and approved releases.

The following would be an advantage, where relevant to your specialism:

• Previous experience in the space, aerospace, satellite systems or defence sectors.

• Familiarity with spacecraft systems, satellite ground segments, mission operations or other space-related engineering environments.

• Knowledge of applicable ECSS standards and configuration management practices relevant to your specialism in space programmes.

• Experience supporting formal configuration reviews, Configuration Control Boards and configuration audits.

• Development baseline CM: familiarity with requirements management and engineering tools such as IBM DOORS or similar platforms.

• Development baseline CM: experience with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), document management or system configuration management tools, such as Windchill, Teamcenter or equivalent systems.

• Software CM: familiarity with software issue tracking tools such as JIRA, automated build and release pipelines, and artefact or package repositories.

• Software CM: scripting or automation skills to support configuration checks, build and release activities, and configuration reporting.
