Project

We are looking for a Backend Software Engineer to join a US MedTech project focused on a large-scale, data-intensive healthcare platform.

The backend powers complex healthcare data processing and search functionality, including provider search, filtering, availability and location-based results.

The core technology stack includes Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, SQL/Oracle, and Apache Solr/SolrCloud. The project combines hands-on backend development with search optimization, platform modernization, automated testing, and infrastructure reliability.

AI-assisted development is also an integral part of the engineering workflow. The team uses Kiro, GitHub Copilot, and comparable coding agents in a structured, human-supervised process — from requirements and technical design through implementation, testing, and code review.

Near-Term Tasks

• Enhance healthcare provider search functionality, including filtering, sorting, suppression rules, facets, provider counts, and response fields.
• Improve geo-aware search, distance sorting, map behavior, and fallback logic.
• Expand automated regression and integration testing for search functionality.
• Continue backend service and shared-library modernization, including the Spring Boot 4 migration.
• Develop and maintain Solr/SolrCloud environments, indexing processes, snapshot/restore capabilities, and monitoring.
• Improve CI/CD, performance testing, build processes, and code-quality tooling.
• Resolve data-quality issues and enhance backend APIs.
• Develop reusable AI engineering instructions, skills, and workflows for the development team.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain backend services using Java and Spring Boot.
• Design, implement, and evolve REST APIs.
• Work with complex business logic and large volumes of structured healthcare data.
• Develop and optimize search functionality using Apache Solr/SolrCloud.
• Work with SQL/Oracle, data pipelines, and service integrations.
• Maintain interconnected services, shared libraries, and external API integrations.
• Write and maintain unit, integration, and regression tests.
• Work with Gradle, static analysis, and code-quality tooling.
• Participate in Java/Spring Boot platform modernization and dependency upgrades.
• Troubleshoot search, indexing, build, integration, and environment issues.
• Use Kiro, GitHub Copilot, or comparable coding agents as part of day-to-day development.
• Create requirements, technical designs, and implementation plans before AI-assisted coding.
• Review AI-generated code, identify deviations from requirements, and validate results through builds and automated tests.
• Maintain useful AI engineering context, including repository instructions, coding guidance, and scoped agent instructions.
• Produce clear implementation, QA, and code-review documentation.

Requirements

• Strong commercial experience with Java.
• Strong hands-on experience with Spring Boot.
• Experience designing and developing REST APIs.
• Strong SQL skills and practical experience with Oracle or comparable relational databases.
• Experience building complex, data-driven backend applications.
• Hands-on experience with Apache Solr/SolrCloud or another search and indexing platform.
• Strong automated-testing practices, including unit and integration testing.
• Experience with Gradle and static code-quality tools.
• Experience working with interconnected services, shared libraries, and external API integrations.
• Hands-on experience with Kiro, GitHub Copilot, or comparable AI coding tools/agents.
• Ability to work within a disciplined AI-assisted development process: plan → review/approve → implement → test → report.
• Ability to critically review AI-generated solutions rather than treating AI as a black box.
• Ability to produce clear technical, QA, and code-review documentation.

Nice to have:

• Experience with Jenkins and CI/CD pipelines.
• Experience with Ansible or other configuration-management tools.
• Experience with Solr infrastructure and search-index reliability.
• Experience with major platform or framework migrations.
• Experience in MedTech, healthcare, or other complex data-intensive systems.
