ABOUT INSIGHT SCHOOLS OF CALIFORNIA AND THE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT SUPPORT SPECIALIST POSITION:

Insight Schools of California (a network of three public charter schools) delivers online/virtual home based-instruction to students in grades 9-12 in California. Insight Schools of California serves at-risk students. We use Stride as our curriculum provider for the basis of instruction and teachers provide live instruction via the Engageli platform. While our schools do offer some scheduling flexibility, students are still required to maintain daily attendance, attend instructional sessions, and complete their coursework each day.

All staff members provide students with individualized attention, maintain ongoing communication with learning coaches, and attend professional development meetings (virtual and in-person). Insight staff members contribute to a positive school culture by engaging in meaningful team collaboration and focusing on the needs of all students. Staff members also meet with students during testing and at in-person events.

The Student Support Specialist is responsible for providing support for the school's comprehensive guidance plan. The Student Support Specialist advises students to manage personal conduct, helps students identify post-secondary and career goals, ensures students are properly placed in classes needed for graduation, and guides students towards making appropriate choices under the guidance of a school counselor. The Student Support Specialist manages the graduation plan creation for all students and manages and updates the graduation plans every term.  The Student Support Specialist works with the teachers and staff to maintain a positive learning experience and encourage parent involvement in the student education. The position helps foster a high touch approach to educational support and exhibits superior customer service skills along with a commitment and desire to provide the best experience possible for students and families. 


HOURS AND SALARY INFORMATION:

Full Time: Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00pm
You are not allowed to have another job during these contracted hours.

Full time High School Student Support Specialists:
Hourly Rate: $23.25

We do participate in CalPERS. Please contact your CalPERS counselor about how employment with any of the Insight Schools of California may affect your personal PERS account.
Only full time employees are offered health, dental, and vision benefits.

We do provide training for all programs and we have a great staff to serve as your support system.

Job Title: High School Student Support Specialist

Reports To: Lead Trauma Guidance Counselor

FLSA Status: Non Exempt

Department: High school


OVERVIEW:

Virtual schools are new models in public education. They look both backward to what we know works well in educating children, and forward to see how technology can help us implement these strategies with children. Virtual school counselors are part of a pioneering effort. Our counselors, therefore, need to share the School’s pioneering mission and approach.


Summary:  The Student Support Specialist is responsible for providing support for the school's comprehensive guidance plan. Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities: The below statements are intended to describe the general nature and scope of work being performed by this position. This is not a complete listing of all responsibilities, duties and/or skills required; other duties may be assigned.   • Creates and updates student Individual Graduation Plans for all students every term
  • Monitors student view of grad plans and follows up with students who have not viewed grad plan
  • Works collaboratively with operations to ensure timely and proper upload of transcripts
  • Conducts email and phone campaigns as needed by school
  • Identifies transcript discrepancies and works to notify counselors and credit clerks of discrepancies and seeks to resolve issues regarding discrepancies
  • Supports counseling team by contributing to counseling newsletters
  • Supports AAs by participating in live sessions to promote grad plans and counseling web site
  • Supports RAISE by contributing to and participating in clubs
  • Works collaboratively with counseling team to create and implement guidance lessons
  • Assists with proctoring standardized testing
  • Contributes to counseling web site
  • Attends staff meetings and participates in school and K12 sponsored Professional Development Events
  • Works collaboratively with counseling team to plan and manage graduation ceremonies
  • Communicates graduation ceremony information to all students and LCs and tracks cap and gown orders and RSVPs
  • Responds to students and LCs to address concerns that may arise or provide support as needed
  • Assist pupils in choosing courses of study best suited to their goals, aptitudes, and interests
  • Review transcripts to ensure students are placed in their proper educational program
  • Contact school districts if more information on new/entering students is needed
  • Annually review each student’s educational progress and career plans, with students individually or in small groups
  • Meet with students individually or in small groups to reinforce their educational plan as it relates to career interests, life skills, and world of work
  • Help students identify career and post-secondary goals
  • Consult with and help support Academic Advisors during the graduation planning process
  • Hold Professional Developments if needed
  • Consult with teachers on ways to integrate career interests with education and to help document for each student those activities related to life skills and the world of work
  • Assigns courses and manages student schedules for all 9th grade students


Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) Certificate and 
  • One (1) year of related experience

  • Ability to pass required background check
  • Ability to obtain fingerprint clearance


DESIRED Qualifications:

  • Experience working with the proposed age group 
  • Experience supporting adults and children in the use of technology 
  • An ability to learn new technology tools quickly (e.g., database and web-based tools) 
  • An ability to support and guide adults as well as students
  • Experience coordinating academically oriented clubs and extracurricular activities 
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience working in and educational setting

This position is a virtual position working from a home office. Must have ability to travel throughout the school year within and between assigned geographic areas to support students, attend regularly scheduled meetings, proctor state exams and participate in school activities and orientations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position has no supervisory responsibilities


RESTRICTION ON TIME OFF:

 

Professional Development: No days off August 10th- 19th (Employees may take time off on dates not assigned to attend professional development/training)

Launch: No more than 2 consecutive days off August 10th – September 25th

Testing: No days off weeks of testing when staff member is assigned (April 26 – May 28th)

End of Year: Dates between June 14th and June 16th approved based upon completion of end of year tasks.
