The Fellow will work with clinical, AI, and product teams to identify and communicate key innovations and insights through various formats like articles, blogs, and newsletters. They will also build an internal innovation story bank to document institutional knowledge and translate complex technical findings into compelling narratives.
This is a remote position.
mDoc is reimagining how healthcare is delivered by putting people, not facilities, at the center of care. Since 2013, we have built and deployed a phygital health ecosystem that enables continuous, personalized self-care, particularly for people living with chronic conditions and for women across their reproductive and maternal health journeys.
Our work combines AI-enabled and human health coaching through CompleteHealth™ and Kem™, community-based NudgeHubs™, digital care navigation through NaviHealth.ai™, and health-worker capacity building.
We deploy this technology in the real world, across different languages, levels of digital literacy, connectivity constraints, health-system fragmentation and complex clinical and operational environments. We test what works, measure outcomes, learn rapidly and continuously redesign.
Building technology is only part of the work. We are looking for exceptional early-career professionals who can help us tell these stories.
mDoc is launching an Innovation & Impact Communications Fellowship for outstanding recent graduates who are deeply curious about the intersection of AI, healthcare, technology, health systems and social impact.
This is not a traditional communications internship. The Fellow will work alongside mDoc's clinical, AI, product, research and implementation teams to uncover and communicate what we are building, testing and learning, and will help build an innovation newsroom inside mDoc.
The Fellow will be expected to ask, not “What should we post this week?” but “What is happening inside mDoc that the rest of the world should know about?”
The Fellow might spend one week understanding how an AI health coach is evaluated for clinical safety, and the next interviewing frontline teams about what happens when digital health meets unreliable connectivity. These insights may then be turned into a newsletter story, technical blog, video script, conference abstract or the early draft of a scientific paper.
Work directly with the ML, clinical, product, research and implementation teams to identify important innovations, insights, results and lessons.
Ask thoughtful questions.
Attend selected product and implementation discussions.
Interview team members, partners and, where appropriate, the people using our services.
Look beyond what happened to understand why it matters.
Research and draft high-quality:
Innovation and thought-leadership articles
Technical and evidence-based blogs
Case studies
Executive and founder thought leadership
Conference abstracts and submissions
Policy and technical briefs
Video and documentary scripts
Research manuscripts and papers
Grant and partner-facing innovation narratives
The Fellow will learn to translate complex technical, clinical and implementation work into writing that is rigorous, understandable and compelling.
Help create a flagship monthly publication highlighting what mDoc is building, testing, learning and discovering.
Give funders, governments, researchers, technologists, healthcare leaders and partners a transparent view into what it takes to build and deploy new models of healthcare in real-world settings.
Systematically document mDoc's innovation and institutional knowledge. For each major innovation or implementation experience, capture:
The problem → our insight → what we built → what is novel → how it was deployed → evidence/results → what did not work → what we changed → what we learned → why it matters.
Over time, this will become a living repository informing publications, grants, partnerships, media, research and future product development.
Work with the research and data teams to turn findings into stories people can understand without compromising scientific rigor.
Ensure results are never reduced to another statistic in a presentation, and help answer: what does this finding tell us about how healthcare could work differently?
Required. Minimum: a Bachelor's degree (Second Class Upper or equivalent) in public health, global health, medicine, science, technology, journalism, communications, public policy, international development, behavioral science, health informatics or another relevant discipline.
Preferred. A completed Master's degree in a relevant field.
Note: We care more about how you think and write than your exact degree.
Required. 0–2 years of relevant experience. Recent graduates (completed studies within the last 2–3 years) are strongly encouraged to apply.
Required. A portfolio or writing samples demonstrating strong writing, such as published articles, blogs, research papers, reports or academic writing.
Preferred. Prior exposure to research, journalism, communications, health or technology-related work, including academic, volunteer, internship or NYSC placements.
Preferred. Experience writing for scientific, technical or policy audiences (abstracts, manuscripts, briefs).
Exceptional writing: Able to make complex material clear without making it simplistic, across formats from articles to scripts to scientific abstracts.
Intellectual curiosity: When someone describes what they built, the instinct is to ask why, how, what happened next and what was learned.
Analytical ability: Comfortable reading research, interrogating data and distinguishing evidence from assertion.
Storytelling: Able to find the story buried in a technical report, product meeting or conversation with a frontline health worker.
Interest in AI and technology: Genuinely interested in how technologies such as AI work, and in their limitations, safety and real-world implementation. Engineering skills are not required.
Accuracy and rigor: Healthcare communications require rigor. Checks facts, interrogates claims and does not exaggerate evidence for the sake of a good story.
Comfort with ambiguity: Understands that innovation is messy and that the most interesting story may begin with something that did not work.
Interviewing and stakeholder engagement: Able to ask thoughtful questions of experts, senior leaders and frontline teams.
Familiarity with digital health, health systems or African health contexts.
Basic video or documentary scripting skills.
Experience producing newsletters or editorial content.
Ability to work with data and interpret research findings with support from the research team.
You find yourself reading about AI, healthcare, technology or social innovation even when nobody has asked you to.
You enjoy asking experts questions until you genuinely understand something.
You have ever read an organization's website and thought, “They're doing something fascinating, but they're explaining it terribly.”
You want to do work that sits somewhere between journalism, research, innovation, strategy and storytelling.
You want your first years of work to involve much more than executing someone else's communications calendar.
This fellowship offers unusual exposure to the realities of designing and deploying health innovation in African health systems. Fellows will gain first-hand experience in:
AI-enabled healthcare
Digital and phygital health delivery
Clinical AI safety and governance
Human-centered product development
Real-world health technology implementation
Health systems and self-care
Research and evidence generation
Scientific and technical communications
Executive thought leadership
Innovation storytelling
Fellows will work with senior leaders and multidisciplinary teams and build a portfolio of substantive work. Exceptional Fellows may be considered for longer-term roles at mDoc.
Some organizations communicate innovation after it happens. At mDoc, you will be close enough to watch it happen: ideas moving from research and product design into communities and health systems, and what happens when technology meets the complexity of people's real lives. You will help capture what those experiences can teach the wider world about the future of healthcare.
If you are deeply curious, write exceptionally well and want a front-row seat to the intersection of AI, healthcare and real-world innovation in Africa, we would love to hear from you.
