Freelance Grant Reviewer/Editor
DickersonBakker is seeking an experienced freelance Grant Reviewer/Editor to support grant proposals prepared for our nonprofit clients. The majority of our clients are faith-based organizations, so candidates must be comfortable working with Christian ministries and reviewing content that reflects their missions, values, and faith commitments. This role focuses on reviewing and strengthening completed grant proposals—not writing grants from the ground up. The ideal candidate will provide thoughtful, substantial feedback that improves each proposal’s clarity, persuasiveness, organization, consistency, and alignment with funder requirements.
Responsibilities
Review completed grant proposals, letters of inquiry, and related application materials.
Provide substantial, actionable feedback to strengthen the proposal’s content and overall effectiveness.
Evaluate whether proposals clearly communicate the organization’s mission, need, proposed activities, anticipated outcomes, and use of funds.
Confirm that responses fully address the funder’s questions, priorities, requirements, and evaluation criteria.
Identify gaps, inconsistencies, unsupported claims, unclear language, and areas requiring additional information.
Recommend revisions that improve clarity, organization, flow, tone, and persuasiveness.
Edit for grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax, consistency, and adherence to word or character limits.
Review supporting information for consistency with the proposal narrative.
Preserve the organization’s voice while helping present its work in a clear and compelling manner.
Communicate feedback respectfully and constructively to grant writers and project stakeholders.
Complete assignments accurately and within established deadlines.
You May Be a Great Fit If You:
Demonstrate professional experience reviewing and editing grant proposals.
Have a strong understanding of effective grant structure, funder expectations, and nonprofit terminology.
Have the ability to provide substantive content feedback—not solely proofreading or copyediting.
Have exceptional editing, analytical, and written communication skills.
Are able to identify weaknesses in a proposal and offer specific recommendations for improvement.
Show excellent attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
Demonstrate strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to meet firm deadlines.
Are comfortable working with faith-based organizations and reviewing content that incorporates Christian beliefs, language, and mission.
Are able to work independently while communicating clearly with writers, consultants, and internal team members.
Show proficiency in Microsoft Word, including Track Changes and comments.
You Will Thrive in This Role if You:
Have experience reviewing grants for Christian ministries, churches, or other faith-based nonprofit organizations.
Are familiar with proposals submitted to private foundations, corporate foundations, and government funders.
Show experience reviewing program narratives, organizational background information, goals, outcomes, budgets, and evaluation plans.
Possess a Bachelor’s degree in English, communications, nonprofit management, or a related field—or equivalent professional experience.
