New Zealand or Australia | Remote or from our Wellington HQ

At Optimal, we build powerful research tools that help teams make data-driven decisions. Trusted by some of the world’s biggest brands, we’re passionate about user experience and the transformative power of human insight.

The role

We’re looking for a Full Stack Product Engineer who is excited to contribute to the evolution of our platform. As part of our small team, you won’t just be writing code - you’ll be actively involved in shaping the direction of our products and understanding how to create the best possible experience for our customers. You’ll work closely with a cross-functional team to ensure our solutions align with both user needs and the broader goals of the business.

This is an opportunity to take ownership of projects, experiment with new ideas, and make a meaningful impact on a product used by teams around the world. Your work will directly influence the way our customers solve problems and deliver outstanding experiences to their own users.

What you’ll do:

  • Build impactful features: Use React, Ruby on Rails and AWS to design and develop new features that improve the customer experience research journey
  • Collaborate cross-functionally: Work with our multidisciplinary Product team to develop innovative solutions that meet the real-world needs of our users
  • Innovate for user needs: Actively contribute ideas to enhance existing tools, focusing on how we can improve user experiences and solve customer challenges more effectively
  • Drive projects forward: Take the lead on technical execution, ensuring products are not only built efficiently but are aligned with our users' goals and feedback
  • Collaborate: Share your expertise, guiding the team in best practices while learning from others, fostering a culture of continuous improvement

What we're looking for:

  • Entrepreneurial: You like taking ownership, figuring things out with imperfect information, and moving ideas from concept to reality without needing everything defined upfront
  • Product-focused: You don't just build features, you care about why they matter. You think about the bigger picture and work closely with product managers and designers to shape solutions for our customers
  • Experience with our stack: You’re familiar with technology relevant to our stack: React, Ruby on Rails, AWS, infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD technologies, and  understand how to use it to build performing and scalable user-focused products
  • Passion for customer impact: You take pride in delivering solutions that truly meet the needs of customers, ensuring each feature enhances the user experience
  • Collaborative and proactive: You work well with others to translate ideas into actionable plans, bringing your technical skills and perspective to make smarter product decisions
  • Pragmatic problem-solving: You’re able to see the bigger picture and break it down into actionable steps that drive results, making sure that we solve the right problems in the most efficient way

What’s in it for you:

  • Competitive salary + Employee Share Option Plan (ESOP) to help you benefit from the long-term success of the company
  • Annual wellbeing allowance and support
  • Generous annual learning and development support
  • Home office set-up
  • An additional day off on your birthday
  • Opportunities for professional growth and development
  • Enhanced parental leave for primary and secondary caregivers
  • The chance to shape our engineering culture and be part of a high performing team
  • Flexible and remote-first working (our HQ is based in Wellington, NZ, but this role can be based anywhere in New Zealand or Australia)

If this sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you. We’ll be interviewing as applications come through.
