We have a fantastic opportunity for an experienced technical and commercially aware Fleet Director to join and lead our national fleet team.


The Fleet Director will have strong technical knowledge to oversee fleet standards, performance and efficiency. This is a key senior hire responsible for ensuring our ambulances operate safely, reliably and efficiently.


This role must provide technical assurance that our maintenance practices are safe, ensuring consistent and robust SOPs across around 40 fleet assistants nationwide. At the same time they must provide strategic leadership, including fleet planning, upgrade programmes, and continuous improvement to increase reliability and reduce costs.


EMED is a product of several mergers and acquisitions, giving a variety of operating models. In some places maintenance is largely outsourced to local suppliers, while in others we undertake heavy work in-house. This role needs to work with all of these, while determining the right balance and future operating model.

Role Responsibilities

Technical authority for fleet within EMED

  • Be the technical authority and source of assurance for all fleet and equipment maintenance related matters, ensuring safety and compliance
  • Undertake a skills gap analysis and create a training plan to ensure every fleet employee meets appropriate standards
  • Create SOPs and method statements for maintenance activities, ensuring safety and compliance
  • Establish change control methodology to safely and robustly implement change
  • Establish an audit regime
  • Ensure comprehensive incident investigation and learnings, in line with technical best practice
  • Stay up to date with industry and vehicle technology developments

 

Supporting fleet operations

  • Validate whether our current devolved fleet structure is appropriate, and adjust as required
  • Implement governance structures to scrutinise and support regional fleet teams
  • Ensure regional fleet teams work together in a collegiate way to provide resilience and share best practice
  • Undertake regular talent reviews and succession planning, ensuring resilience and excellence
  • Coach and mentor regional fleet managers
  • Review and challenge fleet delivery performance
  • Review and challenge financial performance
  • Review and challenge safety performance

 

Innovation

  • Create a structured programme using lean principles or similar to foster continuous improvement, reducing costs and VOR
  • Identify areas for further development, for example internalisation of currently-outsourced maintenance
  • Lead the specification of new vehicles to ensure they meet staff, patient and client requirements
  • Lead the EV strategy, including vehicles and charging infrastructure
  • Lead other innovations to support business development
  • Lead the telematics strategy

 

Fleet administration

  • Lead a team which manages fleet allocation and cascades across the business
  • Lead a team to which ensures all fleet admin tasks, including paperwork and systems, are up to date
  • Support the finance team in overall fleet strategy and procurement planning

 

Do you have what it takes?

  • Extensive technical and mechanical expertise (eg vans, HGVs, PSVs), with the ability to operate as a subject matter expert
  • Professional engineering or fleet-related qualifications (or equivalent experience)
  • Proven experience in senior engineering or technical leadership roles
  • Strong capability in data analysis, performance management, and engineering risk assessment
  • In-depth knowledge of fleet compliance, safety legislation, and regulatory standards
  • Continuous improvement methodologies and track record
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Analytical skills
  • Strong leadership and communication skills
