Field Quality Manager - Chicago, IL

As a Field Quality Manager for Remi, you inspect finished roofing and solar installs across your territory, decide whether each one passes, and send back the work that does not. A job you fail stays failed until you clear it yourself.

About the Role

Remi manages residential roofing and solar work through a network of contractor crews. You own quality for your assigned territory — your Area of Responsibility. Every install that matters gets your eyes on it before we call it done.

You check the work against three things: the scope we actually contracted, the local code, and what the manufacturer requires for the warranty to hold. When something is wrong you document it against a specific checklist point, hand the crew a punch list, and come back to confirm the fix. You are also the person who shows up when a homeowner is upset and needs to hear from someone who can actually do something.

This is a field job. You will be on roofs most days, alone in a truck between them, and in front of homeowners and foremen who do not always want to hear from you.

Quality inspections are the core of the role. Insurance site inspections are part of the mix in two markets while we get the program running.

What You’ll Do

Roughly four to five stops, laid out as a route before you start.

1. Route comes to you: You get the day's stops in order — which are quality inspections, which are site inspections, which are go-backs on work you already failed once.
2. On the roof, about 45 minutes: Photo checklist on an iPad. You work plane by plane through what we contracted and answer the same question each time: was this work done, and is it to standard.
   
3. Call it: Pass it or fail it. A failure is tied to a checklist point with photos, not a paragraph of opinion, so the crew knows exactly what to fix.
   
4. Hand the crew the punch list: You talk to the foreman directly. It stays open until the correction is made and you have re-inspected it yourself.
   
5. Homeowner visits as they come up: When something has gone wrong on a job in your area, you go out, look at it, and tell them what we are going to do and when.
   

Where

Based in Chicago, covering the metro and the collar counties plus Milwaukee and Madison. Ice and water detailing, freeze-thaw failures, and a permit patchwork that changes authority by authority and across the state line. You work from home and your truck — there is no office to report to.

Autonomy In The Role

• In a lot of quality roles the write-up goes to someone else to rule on. Here the call is yours, and it holds.
• You pass or fail the work, and a failure stays open until you clear it.
• Nobody closes your punch list around you to keep a job on schedule.
• On serious findings you can stop work, put a payment on hold, and start the conversation about removing a crew from the network.
• Your findings go on the crew's record and affect how much work they get.
• You own the local code requirements in our system for your market. When the code changes, you update what everyone else inspects against.

What You’ll Bring

• Five or more years in roofing production, on the roof. Foreman, superintendent, or field project manager. You can spot nail placement and overdriving, bad step flashing, a wrong valley, missing starter or drip edge, a ridge vent cut wrong, a failing pipe boot, and soft decking — by looking at it.
• Willing to fail work to a crew's face. Calmly, citing the standard, and still able to work with that crew next week. Candidates tend to underrate this part.
• Comfortable and safe at height, all day. You set your own ladder, you walk steep slope, you wear fall protection without being asked.
• You live in the market and can drive it. Because the truck is ours, you will need to clear our insurer's driver requirements, which includes a motor vehicle record check.
• Willing to work through an app. Everything you find is captured on an iPad. The tools are new and still improving, and we would rather hear that something is broken than find a workaround in your camera roll.
• Code and warranty knowledge for your territory. You have pulled permits and passed municipal inspections in it, and you know what actually voids a manufacturer's system warranty. For the Chicago role that means Illinois and Wisconsin.
  

Preferred skills, not required: Spanish; solar array and penetration flashing experience; HAAG certification or an adjuster or third-party inspection background; hail and wind damage assessment.

Important Details

Better to hear this now than in month three.

Chicago winters change the job. There will be stretches when nobody is getting on a roof. In those weeks the work shifts to reviewing crew photos, tightening our checklists, and keeping the local code library current. If that sounds like a bad month to you, this is the wrong job.

The Chicago territory reaches into Wisconsin. Milwaukee and Madison are part of that area. Expect some long days and the occasional overnight rather than a route that always ends at your own driveway.

Crews will push back. They lose money when you fail their work. The job is holding the standard without making it personal.

You are the first one here. This market doesn't have a Remi field presence yet. You own your area from day one, and you will shape how this function works rather than inherit a finished playbook.

The Hiring Process for this Role

Four steps, and we will tell you where you stand after each one.

• A short call: Twenty minutes on your background, where you live, what you are looking for, and the driving record check.
• Photos and technical questions: We show you ten install photos and ask you to call each one. About half have something wrong. Then we talk through code and warranty.
• Two scenarios with the hiring manager: You fail a crew's work, and you handle an upset homeowner with an active leak. We are listening for how you hold a line, not for a script.
• Roofs and references: Half a day walking two real jobs with us, using the actual app. Then references — we will ask them about a time you stopped or failed work.
