About the Role
We’re looking for an Energy Policy Consultant to join our Transmission and Energy Markets group. In this role, you’ll support a diverse set of projects across the Western Interconnection, contributing research, analysis, and insights that help our clients make informed decisions in a rapidly evolving energy landscape.

Location
We welcome applicants across the U.S., with a preference for candidates located in or open to relocating to Utah. 


What You’ll Do

  • Contribute to client engagements by performing both quantitative and qualitative analysis, including general research and basic spreadsheet modeling.
  • Support senior staff in project management, report writing, and development of PowerPoint summaries to answer key project questions, and in the development of regulatory comments and filings.
  • Support in assessing various transmission and interconnection-related questions for generation developers and large load customers.
  • Participate in industry meetings, summarize key takeaways, and highlight implications of complex market and policy rules into easy-to-understand outcomes for clients.
  • Assist in developing client comments for stakeholder venues such as CAISO initiatives, the Extended Day-Ahead Market (EDAM), Markets+, SPP’s RTO Expansion, the Western Resource Adequacy Program (WRAP), and state utility dockets.
  • Collaborate on business development by creating and organizing data, tools, and information for future projects.
  • Ensure work is completed within budgets, timelines, and client expectations.

What You Bring

Required Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Environmental Policy, Communications, Business, Engineering, or related field.
  • Strong writing, research, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to clearly communicate complex topics in writing and presentations.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with small teams and clients.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially PowerPoint and Excel.
  • High level of professionalism, integrity, critical thinking capability, and attention to detail.


Preferred Skills

  • Master’s degree in Economics, Engineering, Business, or related field.
  • Ideally, candidates will have 3+ years of experience in utility operations, policy, or regulatory functions or in a related field at a market operator or other regional entity
  • Familiarity with the Western Interconnection and electricity market challenges.
  • Experience managing projects, large datasets, or analytical processes.
  • Passion for the future of the grid, including technologies like energy storage, transmission, and clean generation.

Our Interview Process

For this role, the process typically may include these steps: 

  1. Introductory Conversation (30 mins) – A chance to learn more about Energy Strategies and share your background.
  2. Brief Questionnaire -will be sent to shortlisted candidates (estimated time commitment 15-20 minutes)
  3. Hiring Manager Interview (45- 60 mins) – Deeper discussion about your skills, experiences, and what you’re looking for.
  4. Case/Analytical Exercise (take-home) – A short project that gives you a feel for the type of work we do with candidates presenting to a select team at Energy Strategies.
  5. Team Conversation (30-45 mins) – Meet with potential teammates to discuss our culture and day-to-day work.
  6. Final Discussion (30 mins) – Wrap-up conversation to ensure mutual alignment and answer any remaining questions.
