Chemours is seeking a Simulation & Design Specialist - Thermodynamics & HVACR Systems to join our Thermal & Specialized Solutions team. This position can be performed remotely from Spain, Italy, Germany, France or Belgium.

Job summary

Are you passionate about thermodynamics, system modelling and the future of sustainable heating and cooling?

At Chemours, you will play a key role in helping OEMs and customers across Europe adapt HVACR, heat pump and refrigeration systems to the next generation of lower-GWP refrigerants. As regulations and market expectations continue to change, many manufacturers are facing complex technical questions: How will a new refrigerant behave in their system? What needs to change in the design? How do they maintain performance, safety and efficiency?

This is where your expertise comes in.

In this role, you will use advanced simulation and modelling tools such as Dymola, Modelica, MATLAB/Simulink and Python to model thermodynamic systems, validate performance and translate complex simulation outcomes into practical engineering recommendations. You will work closely with Technical Marketing, Product Development, Application Engineering, R&D, Sales, Sustainability, Regulatory Affairs and OEM partners across Europe.

This is not a role where simulation is used only to confirm decisions that have already been made. You will help shape technical recommendations, support customer decision-making and contribute to the adoption of climate-friendly cooling and heating solutions.

The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Develop, maintain and validate dynamic simulation models for heat pump, refrigeration, air conditioning and thermal management systems.
  • Build and deploy simulation models using Dymola, Modelica, MATLAB/Simulink, Python and related engineering tools.
  • Perform thermodynamic system simulations and optimization studies focused on energy efficiency, refrigerant selection, system performance, control strategies and safety considerations.
  • Support OEMs and customers in understanding how Chemours refrigerants perform in their systems and what design changes may be required.
  • Analyze laboratory, field-test and customer data to validate models and improve predictive accuracy.
  • Evaluate compressors, heat exchangers, expansion devices, refrigerants, thermal storage systems and control architectures.
  • Provide technical recommendations related to refrigerant glide, pressure and temperature behavior, system efficiency and performance trade-offs.
  • Support the development, qualification and adoption of lower-GWP refrigerants and future HVACR system architectures.
  • Collaborate with customers, OEMs, suppliers, engineering partners and research organizations across Europe.
  • Prepare technical reports, simulation methodologies, engineering recommendations and customer-facing presentations.
  • Provide simulation and thermodynamics expertise to Technical Marketing, Product Development, Commercial, Sustainability and Regulatory Affairs teams.
  • Contribute to technology roadmaps and identify emerging trends in heat pumps, refrigeration, air conditioning and thermal management technologies.

The following is required for this role:

Education requirements and/or equivalent experience

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Thermal Engineering, Energy Engineering, Mechatronics, Applied Physics or a related technical discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in simulation and modelling of thermodynamic systems.
  • Relevant applied PhD experience may be considered, especially where the work involved practical system modelling, HVACR, heat pumps, refrigeration or energy systems.

Technical experience required

  • Strong knowledge of thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid dynamics, refrigeration cycles, heat pump technology and HVACR systems.
  • Hands-on experience with Dymola and/or Modelica simulation environments.
  • Experience with MATLAB/Simulink, Python or similar engineering and scientific computing tools.
  • Experience developing, validating and optimizing dynamic simulation models.
  • Ability to connect simulation results with laboratory data, field measurements or customer system data.
  • Ability to translate complex technical findings into clear, actionable engineering recommendations.
  • Good communication skills in English, with the ability to work effectively in an international and remote team environment.
  • Willingness to travel up to approximately 20%, including occasional international travel within EMEA to visit customers, OEMs or internal teams.

The following is preferred for this role:

  • PhD or advanced research background related to thermodynamics, HVACR systems, heat pumps, refrigeration, energy systems or thermal management technologies.
  • Experience working with residential, commercial or industrial heat pump, refrigeration or HVACR OEMs.
  • Knowledge of low-GWP refrigerants, future refrigerant technologies and European regulatory frameworks.
  • Experience with CFD tools such as ANSYS Fluent, OpenFOAM or similar technologies.
  • Familiarity with digital twins, model-based systems engineering or advanced control strategies.
  • Experience in customer-facing technical support, application engineering or technical marketing.
  • Experience with industry standards, advocacy work or regulatory discussions.
  • Additional language skills such as French, German, Italian, Spanish or Dutch.

Compensation and benefits

Chemours offers competitive compensation and benefits, which may differ by country. The role is positioned at job level 25, with country-specific salary ranges and bonus opportunities. The maximum base salary budget for this role is currently up to €90,000, depending on country, experience and internal alignment.

As a general guide, hiring is typically targeted around the country-specific midpoint range, although final compensation will depend on location, experience, skills and market conditions. The current annual base salary ranges differ by country, with ranges provided for Spain, Italy, France, Belgium and Germany.

  • France midpoint: €72.800,-
  • Belgium midpoint: €98.350,-
  • Germany midpoint €97.500,-
