AI Summary

The Director will lead complex, cross-functional commercial initiatives from strategy through execution, acting as a business owner to drive outcomes. They will manage program milestones, dependencies, and risks while ensuring alignment between executive leadership and operational teams.

Overview

About the Role & Team

IDC is looking for a Director, Commercial Programs & Delivery to help drive some of the Commercial organization’s most important initiatives from strategy through execution.

This is a broad, hands-on role that spans the full range of program and project management.  Depending on the initiative, this person may help shape the business problem and desired outcome, act as the Business Owner, coordinate multiple Initiative Leads, engage Executive Sponsors, build the operating plan, manage dependencies and decisions, or get into the details required to keep execution moving.

The role requires someone who is comfortable operating at very different levels.  One day may involve framing a strategic recommendation for senior leadership; the next may involve working through a detailed milestone plan, resolving ownership gaps, preparing a decision, or following up on actions.  There is no clean handoff between strategy and execution.  This person is expected to connect the two and stay with the work through delivery and adoption.

The strongest candidate will know when to zoom out, when to zoom in, and how to keep the full picture connected.

What You’ll Do

  • Shape initiatives from the start. Turn commercial priorities, business problems, and emerging ideas into clearly defined initiatives with a specific outcome, scope, ownership, and path forward.
  • Act as a Business Owner when needed. Clarify the problem being solved, establish direction, facilitate trade-offs, and remain accountable for the intended business outcome.
  • Lead programs and initiatives end to end. Translate strategy into workstreams, plans, milestones, dependencies, risks, decisions, and measures of success.
  • Drive Initiative Leads and functional owners. Create clarity around ownership, maintain momentum, challenge slippage, and ensure commitments turn into action.
  • Engage Executive Sponsors effectively. Bring forward the right issues, decisions, and strategic questions at the right time, with enough context for leaders to contribute meaningfully.
  • Operate at multiple levels of detail. Move comfortably between executive discussions, operating-model design, program planning, and detailed project execution.
  • Create structure from ambiguity. Bring order to fast-moving work without over-engineering it.
  • Manage execution rigor. Maintain the plans, milestones, dependencies, risks, actions, and follow-through needed to keep initiatives moving.
  • Connect work across the portfolio. Identify overlaps, conflicts, cross-initiative dependencies, and opportunities to simplify or sequence work more effectively.
  • Drive decisions into action. Frame choices clearly, engage the right people, and ensure decisions translate into execution.
  • Stay through implementation and adoption. Do not treat completion of a document, system, or process as the finish line. Stay engaged through rollout, adoption, measurement, and course correction.
  • Partner closely with the Commercial PMO. Work within the portfolio structure, governance, and operating cadence established by the PMO while bringing deeper delivery leadership to priority initiatives.

What Success Looks Like

The person in this role creates leverage for the Commercial organization. They turn ambiguity into structure, make complex work easier to understand, create accountability across teams, and keep leadership connected without pulling them into unnecessary detail. They know when something needs executive attention and when it simply needs someone to roll up their sleeves and solve it. They are also a driving force behind execution. Important initiatives move faster because ownership is clearer, dependencies surface earlier, decisions happen at the right time, and teams understand what needs to happen next. Most importantly, they connect strategic intent to detailed execution and make sure the work actually moves.

What You Bring

  • Significant experience leading complex, cross-functional programs, transformation efforts, or strategic business initiatives.
  • Strong business judgment and the ability to understand the commercial objective behind the work, not just the project plan.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive outcomes across teams without direct authority.
  • Experience working directly with senior executives and navigating competing priorities, perspectives, and organizational boundaries.
  • The ability to take ambiguous problems and create clear structure, ownership, sequencing, and action.
  • Strong facilitation and decision-framing skills, including the ability to move groups from discussion to decision.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to simplify complex work for executive audiences.
  • Deep understanding of both program and project management disciplines, including planning, milestones, dependencies, risks, governance, change management, implementation, and adoption.
  • Comfort moving between strategy, operating-model design, program leadership, project management, and hands-on execution.
  • A strong bias toward action, follow-through, and accountability.

What Makes This Role Different

This role sits at the intersection of program leadership and delivery.  The Commercial PMO provides the portfolio structure, governance, operating cadence, and visibility across the broader body of work. The Director, Commercial Programs & Delivery works within that system to take priority initiatives deeper shaping the work, driving execution, coordinating Initiative Leads and functional owners, and staying close enough to the details to ensure delivery.  At different points, the work may require strategic thinking, program leadership, detailed project management, or hands-on execution.
