GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

This position manages AWS RDS (MySQL 8.0 and PostgreSQL 15) databases that support large scale application workloads. The DBA ensures the performance, reliability, and security of the data layer while collaborating closely with application engineering teams. The role is responsible for managing, optimizing, and supporting the organization’s database environments, with emphasis on SQL query development and performance tuning. The DBA serves as the primary escalation point for database and data related issues and works with internal teams to maintain dependable data access across applications. The DBA also partners with customer care to troubleshoot reported problems and executes operational scripts as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Database Administration

• Administer MySQL 8.0 and PostgreSQL 15 databases in production and non-production environments.
• Perform database installation, configuration, patching, upgrades, and lifecycle management.
• Manage backups, recovery processes, high availability configurations, and disaster recovery procedures.
• Implement and maintain database security, user access controls, auditing, encryption, and compliance requirements.
• Monitor database health, capacity, availability, and performance using established monitoring and alerting tools.
• Troubleshoot and resolve database incidents including slow performance, blocking, deadlocks, replication issues, and connectivity problems.
• Participate in on-call rotations and provide production support for critical database services.

Database Development and Data Modeling

• Design, create, and maintain database schemas, including tables, indexes, constraints, views, stored procedures, functions, and other database objects.
• Collaborate with application engineering teams on database design, schema changes, and data access patterns.
• Review, develop, and optimize SQL code, queries, and database objects to ensure scalability and performance.
• Support and execute database migrations, schema versioning, and deployment activities.
• Implement and maintain indexing strategies to support application performance and reporting requirements.
• Review and execute approved data modification requests while ensuring data integrity and auditability.

Performance Engineering

• Analyze database workloads and identify opportunities for performance improvement.
• Monitor and tune SQL execution plans, indexing strategies, resource utilization, and database configuration settings.
• Investigate and resolve performance issues affecting applications, microservices, integrations, and reporting workloads.
• Partner with development teams to improve query design and reduce database bottlenecks.

Automation and Operational Excellence

• Develop and maintain automation scripts using Python, Bash, MySQL Shell, or similar technologies.
• Support CI/CD and database deployment processes through automated tooling and operational workflows.
• Maintain database standards, documentation, operational procedures, and best practices.
• Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that enhance database reliability, security, and operational efficiency.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Systems, or equivalent practical experience
• 3 to 5 years of hands‑on experience with relational database systems, specifically MySQL and PostgreSQL
• Strong knowledge of database design, normalization, indexing strategies, and query optimization
• Proficient in writing, maintaining, and tuning SQL and PL/pgSQL (or MySQL stored procedures where applicable)
• Proficient with MySQL Workbench, pgAdmin, and command‑line administrative utilities
• Proficient with Git for source control and database change management
• Experience with database backup, restore, point‑in‑time recovery, and replication
• Knowledge of schema versioning and migration tools commonly used with Spring Boot
• Comfortable supporting 24×7 production environments and participating in on‑call rotations
• Ability to learn modern technologies quickly and adapt to evolving architectures
• Willingness to work after hours or weekends during production issues or planned maintenance
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to manage multiple tasks independently and work effectively in a dynamic, team‑oriented environment
• Experience with Java Spring Boot application architectures, including connection pooling and ORM layers such as Hibernate, is a plus
• Experience with AWS RDS, Aurora, or other cloud database services is a plus
• Experience with scripting languages (Python, Bash, or similar) is a plus

PREFERRED SKILLS

• Experience with managed cloud database services (AWS RDS, Azure Database for MySQL/PostgreSQL, GCP Cloud SQL)
• Exposure to Kubernetes, operators, or containerized database patterns
• Familiarity with caching tiers such as Redis
• Basic understanding of Java to trace how queries are generated and invoked
• Experience with partitioning, logical replication, or performance extensions (e.g., pg_stat_statements)
