The Database Administrator will manage existing relational databases and lead the migration of Oracle database structures to Azure SQL Managed Instance. Responsibilities include schema mapping, performance tuning, data validation, and ensuring operational stability across development and production environments.
This is a remote position.
The Database Administrator will administer existing relational database environments and analyze the structure of an existing Oracle database to recreate the equivalent schema and database objects in Azure SQL Managed Instance. The role focuses on understanding the source database, mapping Oracle structures to SQL Server/Azure SQL equivalents, creating and validating target database objects, supporting data validation, and maintaining database performance, security, availability, and operational stability.
· Administer and support existing databases, including routine monitoring, access management, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
· Examine the existing Oracle database structure and document schemas, tables, columns, data types, primary and foreign keys, constraints, indexes, views, sequences, triggers, stored procedures, and functions.
· Recreate the corresponding database structure in Azure SQL Managed Instance, preserving the source data model and relationships wherever appropriate.
· Map Oracle data types and database objects to suitable SQL Server/Azure SQL equivalents, identifying compatibility gaps and required changes.
· Review Oracle-specific SQL, PL/SQL, functions, sequences, identity behavior, triggers, and other database-specific features; support conversion to T-SQL or Azure SQL-compatible implementations where required.
· Create and maintain schemas, tables, constraints, indexes, views, stored procedures, and functions in the target database as required.
· Validate that target schema objects, relationships, constraints, and key definitions are complete and consistent with the source Oracle structure.
· Prepare and maintain database scripts and support repeatable deployment of schema changes across development, test, staging, and production environments.
· Support data loading and validation by checking record counts, key relationships, data types, nullability, and reconciliation results.
· Analyze SQL queries and execution plans, identify bottlenecks, and tune indexes and database objects to improve performance.
· Troubleshoot database connectivity and query issues in collaboration with backend developers and other technical team members.
· Manage database permissions and access controls, and support backup, recovery, monitoring, storage, blocking, and deadlock analysis.
· Maintain clear documentation of source structures, target structures, conversion decisions, scripts, and validation results.
· Typically 5–8+ years of database administration and/or database development experience.
· Strong practical experience with Oracle database schemas, tables, data types, constraints, indexes, views, sequences, triggers, stored procedures, and functions.
· Hands-on experience with Microsoft SQL Server and/or Azure SQL Managed Instance, including schema creation and database administration.
· Ability to analyze an Oracle schema and recreate equivalent structures in SQL Server/Azure SQL, with an understanding of platform differences.
· Strong SQL skills and working knowledge of PL/SQL and T-SQL.
· Experience with relational data modeling, primary and foreign keys, referential integrity, indexes, and constraints.
· Experience with database performance analysis, query tuning, permissions, monitoring, and backup/recovery practices.
· Ability to write, review, test, and maintain database DDL and deployment scripts.
· Strong troubleshooting, documentation, analytical, and cross-team communication skills.
· Experience with Oracle-to-SQL Server or Oracle-to-Azure SQL modernization projects.
· Familiarity with SQL Server Migration Assistant (SSMA) for Oracle or other schema conversion and comparison tools.
· Experience with database schema comparison, deployment automation, and validation utilities.
· Familiarity with Azure Portal and Azure SQL monitoring and diagnostic capabilities.
· Experience collaborating with application developers and data migration teams during database modernization.
