As a Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central Solutions Consultant, you will utilize best practices and methodologies for the design and implementation of Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central (BC or D365BC), as well as work with the internal team to provide subject matter expertise and handle escalated support issues for existing clients. This role will work closely with the SD Digital leadership and implementation teams to develop solutions for new and existing clients. Additionally, this position will play a pivotal role in building out intellectual property for targeted industries.
We offer flexible work arrangements tailored to your location. Candidates based in Pittsburgh, PA or Columbus, OH areas will work our hybrid work model, allowing you to enjoy the flexibility of working from home as well as in the office. For candidates located elsewhere in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Texas or Florida and willing to travel to our offices and clients as-needed, we welcome fully remote applicants.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Full lifecycle implementation of Microsoft Dynamics Business Central, including requirements gathering, documentation, design, testing, training and support
- Lead discovery workshops with client finance and operations stakeholders to elicit requirements, perform fit-gap analysis against standard Business Central capabilities, and translate the output into functional design documents that drive configuration and (where needed) custom development
- Document and communicate issues to project management
- Identify software or service opportunities for existing and new clients and opportunities that support growth initiatives
- Support pre-sales activities by running tailored Business Central demonstrations for prospective clients, contributing to SOW scoping and effort estimation, and answering technical questions during the sales cycle
- Work with customers and development consultants to document business and technical processes, requirements for custom development needs
- Design and oversee integrations between Business Central and adjacent systems (CRM, payroll, payment processors, EDI, expense tools, industry-specific apps) using native BC APIs, Power Automate, Dataverse, or third-party connectors
- Configure Business Central across the core financial modules — Chart of Accounts, Dimensions, posting groups, number series, AP/AR setup, bank, fixed assets, financial reports / account schedules, and approvals — and document the configuration so the client can maintain it post-go-live
- Assist with application updates and upgrades
- Plan and execute data migration from legacy systems (QuickBooks, Sage, Dynamics GP, NAV, Excel) into Business Central — chart of accounts, master data, open AR/AP, trial balance, and historical transactions — using Configuration Packages, RapidStart, or comparable tooling, with reconciliation back to the source system
- Facilitate user acceptance testing and deliver end-user and train-the-trainer sessions so the client's finance team owns the system at go-live — including written job aids, recorded walkthroughs, and live workshops tailored to controllers, AP/AR clerks, and operational users
- Lead post-go-live hypercare for the first one to two month-end close cycles — stabilizing issues, coaching power users, and identifying optimization opportunities — then transition the client into steady-state managed support
- Provide on-going support to customers including following-up on tickets with appropriate urgency
- Additional responsibilities as business and/or client needs evolve
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in business, engineering, finance, or related field
- Minimum of three years of ERP implementation experience using a defined project methodology (e.g., Microsoft Sure Step, Agile, or a partner-specific delivery framework), including discovery, fit-gap analysis, configuration, testing, training, and go-live support
- Minimum of two years of Dynamics 365 Business Central implementation experience focused on the Financials and Accounting modules (GL, AP, AR, Bank, Fixed Assets, dimensions, and financial reporting)
- Dynamics 365 Business Central Functional Consultant Associate (MB-800) certification, renewed annually per Microsoft requirements
- Working knowledge of US GAAP fundamentals and the month-end close cycle (journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, sub-ledger to GL tie-out, financial statement preparation), with the ability to speak credibly with controllers and CFOs about their close process
- Hands-on experience with data migration into Business Central — chart of accounts, customer/vendor masters, open AR/AP, trial balance, and historical transactions — using Configuration Packages, RapidStart, or comparable tooling, with documented reconciliation back to the source system
Preferred:
- Dynamics 365 Finance Functional Consultant Associate (MB-310) — adjacent credential demonstrating deeper finance ERP fluency beyond BC
- CPA, CMA, or Bachelor's/Master's degree in Accounting or Finance, or equivalent professional accounting experience (Staff Accountant, Senior Accountant, FP&A Analyst, Controller)
- Familiarity with Power BI, Power Automate, and the broader Microsoft Power Platform for extending Business Central reporting and workflow
- Prior experience implementing BC for middle-market companies ($50M–$1B revenue) in manufacturing, retail, distribution/logistics, nonprofit, or MSP environments
- Hands-on experience deploying Business Central's agentic AI capabilities (Sales Order Agent, Payables Agent, and custom agents built with the Agent Designer / MCP server) and integrating BC with the broader Microsoft AI stack — Copilot Studio, Azure AI Foundry, and Microsoft Fabric — to extend ERP workflows beyond out-of-the-box functionality
- Working knowledge of common Business Central ISV solutions — such as Binary Stream (multi-entity management, advanced AP/property management), Continia (Document Capture, Expense Management, Payment Management), Jet Reports, Insight Works, or Tasklet Factory — and the judgment to recommend when to extend BC with an ISV versus configure or customize natively
Other:
- Demonstrated ability to lead requirements gathering, business process mapping, and fit-gap analysis with client finance and accounting stakeholders, and to produce the functional design documentation that drives configuration and development
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Limited travel to customer sites (10%)
- Self-starter with intellectual curiosity, a continuous-learning mindset, and ambition to grow with the practice — you stay current on Business Central releases and emerging Microsoft capabilities, take ownership without waiting to be told, and view every engagement as an opportunity to sharpen your craft
WHY SD DIGITAL
You will join a practice that is growing quickly inside one of the most respected independent accounting and advisory firms in the country — recognized by Accounting Today, Inside Public Accounting, and ClearlyRated. You will work alongside a team of digital innovators guided by a shared set of values: eye on the prize, progress over perfection, courage to be candid, real-world experience, hardwired empathy, and sustainable speed.
If you want to build something — a practice, a methodology, a team — and you want to do it with people who care as much about the work as they do about each other, we would love to meet you.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
Twelve months in, we will know this role is right for you because:
- Finance go-lives land clean: the General Ledger, sub-ledgers (AP, AR, Bank, Fixed Assets), and inventory/COGS sub-ledger all reconcile to opening balances at cutover, with documented tie-outs the client's controller signs off on.
- The Chart of Accounts and Dimension strategy you designed is sustainable — clients are using Dimensions (not new GL accounts) to slice reporting by department, location, project, or product line, and dimension combinations are governed with default and blocking rules.
- Month-end close cycle time is materially shorter than the client's pre-implementation baseline, driven by automated bank reconciliation, recurring journals, intercompany posting, and clean sub-ledger-to-GL processes.
- Financial reporting in Business Central (account schedules / financial reports, account categories, and Power BI on top of BC) replaces the client's spreadsheet-based reporting — the CFO and Controller pull their monthly package from the system, not from Excel.
- Statutory and audit readiness is built in: posting groups, document numbering, audit trails, and user permissions are configured so the client's external auditor can trace any transaction from financial statement back to source document without consultant help.
- Sales tax, 1099, and multi-entity/intercompany processes are operating without workarounds, and the client closes consolidated books inside Business Central rather than outside it.
- On rescue engagements, you diagnose the root cause quickly (typically: broken posting groups, mis-mapped dimensions, unreconciled sub-ledgers, or a botched data migration), stabilize the close within the first one to two cycles, and deliver a written remediation plan the client can execute against.
- Clients adopt the system rather than tolerate it — finance users are working in Business Central daily, change requests trend toward optimization (not break-fix), and the client references the engagement when their peers ask who implemented their ERP.
