Consumer Engagement Automation Engineer

About b.well

b.well is solving healthcare’s fragmentation problem with our FHIR-based health data management platform. The platform connects data from EHRs, wearables, portals, and other sources, while our intelligence engine personalizes the consumer experience. By simplifying the complex healthcare ecosystem, we make it easy and convenient for consumers to engage and take action — whether it’s scheduling care, setting reminders, or accessing health data. For our clients, this means better health outcomes, operational efficiency, and stronger consumer engagement.

This is a full time role open to fully remote work.

About the role

The Consumer Engagement Automation Engineer builds and operates the systems that produce b.well’s member communications and content — email, push, SMS, and in-app — across every enterprise client.

This role has changed. A year ago this person hand-built templates in our tooling with hand-coded HTML and Handlebars, and a single branded email set could take a week. Today that same set is generated in about an hour from a config file and a render script. The output is no longer the scarce thing — the system that produces it is.

So we are hiring an engineer. Your value is in building, maintaining, and scaling the skills, agentic workflows, data pipelines, and reusable blueprints that generate personalized, compliant communications on demand — and in owning the data that makes them work. In short: you build the machine that builds the campaigns, not the campaigns one at a time.

What you’ll do:

  • Build reusable engagement systems, not one-off assets. Design skills, templates-as-code, agentic workflows, and campaign blueprints that turn a week of manual build work into an hour of configured, repeatable output.
  • Own the automation and content stack end to end. Iterable (journeys, triggered campaigns, segmentation, templates, A/B testing), plus SendGrid, OneSignal, Twilio, Wagtail CMS, our content publishing system (CPS), and Lokalise for localization.
  • Own the data layer that powers engagement. Event and attribute schema, data hygiene, segment and feature design, and the integrations and pipelines that feed personalization and AI-generated content.
  • Apply prompt engineering and agent design to production. Build and tune the prompt libraries, skills, and agentic workflows that let AI draft, assemble, localize, and QA communications reliably and on-brand.
  • Build the guardrails. Stand up automated evaluation and QA for accuracy, accessibility, deliverability, brand consistency against the standards set by Consumer Engagement Strategy, and regulatory compliance (HIPAA, TCPA, FCC, CAN-SPAM) — before anything ships.
  • Build self-serve visibility. Stand up the reporting and data access that let client-facing teams answer routine campaign and performance questions directly, without a request to the engagement team.
  • Translate requirements and partner cross-functionally. Turn engagement requirements from our strategy and programs roles into technical specs, and work day to day with Engineering, Data, and Product.
  • Be the domain expert. Understand, better than anyone, how member communications are produced, personalized, measured, and scaled across the client portfolio — and build with a “ten new clients tomorrow” mindset.
How this role works with AI:

  • AI handles the production; you own the system.
  • AI now handles first-draft template and content production, HTML and Handlebars assembly, localization drafts, variant generation, and routine QA.
  • You own the systems that do all of that, the decision of what to automate, the data layer, and the guardrails that keep it compliant and on-brand.
What you’ll bring:
  • 4–6+ years in marketing automation, lifecycle/CRM engineering, marketing ops, or a builder-type role, with deep hands-on Iterable (or comparable enterprise ESP) expertise.
  • Real technical fluency. SQL, comfort with data models and APIs, and scripting (Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, or similar). You build — you don’t only configure.
  • An AI-native way of working. Prompt engineering, building or operating agents and skills, and designing evaluation for AI output — and you can show the leverage it gives you.
  • Data enablement skills. Schema and event/attribute modeling, data hygiene, and integration work.
  • Systems thinking and a documentation habit. You build things that compound and that others can run without you.
  • Regulated-environment experience. Working knowledge of HIPAA, TCPA, FCC, and CAN-SPAM, or the ability to ramp quickly.
  • Strong cross-functional communication. You can write a requirements doc — and push back on a bad one.
Nice to have:
  • Healthcare or digital health experience
  • Analytics and experimentation fluency (Sigma or similar)
  • Experience building internal tooling, MCP integrations, or agent frameworks
