WE ARE A21

At A21, we are fueled by radical hope—the kind that refuses to accept that slavery is someone else’s problem. We believe that freedom is possible, and we work every day to make that belief a reality.

We are a global nonprofit organization on a mission to abolish slavery everywhere, forever. For more than 17 years, we’ve assisted people from human trafficking and walked with them through the journey of restoration. We stand on the frontlines, not just to fight for justice—but to build a world where every person is free.

In a single moment, a number becomes a name, a tragedy becomes a victory, and belief becomes action. Freedom is the goal—for every human being on the planet.

At A21, we are deeply committed to the development and growth of our volunteers. Volunteering with A21 means joining a global movement to end modern slavery and making a meaningful contribution to our mission. As a volunteer, you will be equipped, encouraged, and challenged to grow both personally and professionally.

OVERVIEW

You will join A21's IT department, a lean team responsible for supporting our global team, securing the organization, and building the tools that equip our teams and strengthen frontline operations. Working closely with the Head of IT and our IT Support Coordinator, you will contribute your computer science skills to internal development, automation, and security projects that make our teams more effective and our data better protected.

Because of the sensitive nature of our work, volunteer projects are scoped to internal tooling, security, and infrastructure. You will not work with live case, victim, or investigative data. Within that scope there is meaningful, high-impact technical work to be done, and a good deal of freedom to shape how it gets built.

OPPORTUNITIES + KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Your specific projects will be agreed with the Head of IT based on your interests and skills.
Work may include:

  • Designing and building an improved reporting and data-visualization interface for our Reach team, making it easier and more intuitive for non-technical staff to manage and interpret their data.
  • Reviewing and extending internal Apps Script and Google Workspace automation tooling.
  • Researching and prototyping a remote wipe solution for team laptops, including a clean, user-friendly mechanism for smoothly wiping devices as part of team offboarding.
  • Providing technical input on larger frontline engineering projects, such as architecture reviews and assessing options for custom AI-driven functionality.
  • Documenting your work clearly so it can be maintained and built on by the IT team after the engagement.

Depending on interest and fit, there may also be opportunities to support our web development team on general web work.

WHAT YOU’LL GAIN

  • Hands-on experience applying full-stack development, automation, and data skills to real-world nonprofit problems
  • Exposure to a global NGO working on the frontlines of justice, and insight into how technology supports anti-trafficking work
  • Practical experience in secure development practices and data governance in a sensitive-data environment
  • Meaningful, portfolio-worthy deliverables with a high degree of ownership
  • Opportunities to build your professional network
  • Option to request a professional reference from A21
  • Documentation of volunteer hours where required for academic credit

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be 18+ years old and legally eligible to volunteer in the US for a minimum of 2 months
  • Strong communication skills
  • Studying or experienced in computer science or a related field
  • Skills in one or more of: full-stack development, automation workflows, data analysis, or machine learning
  • The ability to work independently on a self-contained project
  • Sound judgment around sensitive data and a willingness to work within defined access boundaries
  • Able to commit approximately 5 to 10 hours per week
  • Reliable remote working setup, including VPN and antivirus software - or reasonable equivalents.
