This role is open to candidates based in LATAM, Africa, and Eastern Europe. Please note that as this role supports U.S.-based clients, candidates must be available to work during U.S. business hours aligned with the client’s time zone.

Our client is a character-driven comedy brand whose humor sits between cute, chaotic, relatable, and slightly unhinged. Its comedy is adult-first without relying on crude or edgy humor for its own sake, exploring themes such as anxiety, friendship chaos, bad decisions, adulting, social batteries, relationships, tiny victories, and the absurdity of everyday life.

The brand has an established universe of plush animal characters with existing personalities, relationships, and a defined world.

Role Overview

The Comedy Writer will help expand the brand’s existing character universe across comics, social content, memes, short-form animation, and character storytelling.

This is primarily an idea-generation role rather than a long-form scriptwriting position. The role will learn the characters and their relationships deeply, generate a high volume of funny situations and interactions, develop recurring bits and social hooks, and translate those concepts into clear creative briefs that illustrators can execute.

Key Responsibilities

Comedy & Character Ideation

• Generate a high volume of comedy concepts rooted in the brand’s existing characters.

• Develop funny situations, character interactions, comic concepts, recurring bits, and social hooks.

• Learn the characters’ personalities, relationships, and world deeply enough to develop ideas that feel consistent with each character.

• Generate a steady volume of ideas and content week over week.

Multi-Format Content

• Create concepts across comics, memes, stickers and GIFs, short-form video, and static posts.

• Adapt ideas to different formats and platforms.

• Understand how the same joke may need to work differently as a comic, Reel, TikTok, meme, or static post.

• Develop concepts where text and imagery work together to create the humor.

Creative Briefs

• Turn comedy and character concepts into clear creative briefs that illustrators can execute.

• Communicate the idea and character interaction clearly enough for the creative team to bring concepts to life.

Collaboration

• Collaborate closely with the team through project management tools and regular check-ins.

Qualifications

Experience

• Experience writing for a character or mascot brand is a plus.

• Experience or strong interest in animated characters, comics, and toy culture is a plus.

• Formal experience level is flexible, with junior, senior, self-taught, and formally trained candidates all considered.

• Comedic instinct and the test submission will be prioritized over résumé experience.

Skills

• Sharp and current understanding of U.S. humor and internet culture, with comedy that feels native and conversational rather than overly scripted.

• Strong instinct for character-driven comedy, where humor comes from the character’s established personality.

• Strong understanding of how text and imagery work together to create effective comedy.

• Ability to turn creative ideas into briefs that illustrators can execute.

• Ability to generate a high volume of ideas and identify the strongest concepts rather than over-polishing individual ideas.

• Ability to adapt comedy concepts across comics, memes, short-form video, stickers/GIFs, and static social content.

What Success Looks Like

• Develop a deep understanding of the existing characters, their personalities, relationships, and world.

• Consistently generate a high volume of character-driven comedy ideas.

• Create concepts that feel authentic to what each character would naturally say or do.
