Seeking an interim facility coding manager. This role would be overseeing facility inpatient, observation, day surgery, and emergency department. Candidates must have 5 years relevant leadership experience in the facility setting for inpatient coding and across all areas of outpatient facility coding. The role is a working manager role, meaning the candidate must have coding knowledge and be able to assist with auditing, coding questions, etc. as needed. The role will be at an academic trauma level 1 hospital, previous experience with this type of facility highly preferred.  Experience with Cerner and 3M required. The role is 100% remote; no onsite is needed. This role would be for a 6-12 month engagement.  Schedule would be M-F 8am – 4:30pm MST.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily coding operations for:
    • Inpatient (IP)
    • Observation
    • Day Surgery
    • Emergency Department (ED)
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and performance oversight to coding teams across all facility settings
  • Act as a subject matter expert (SME) for facility coding, ensuring compliance with coding guidelines and regulatory requirements
  • Perform coding audits and quality reviews to maintain accuracy and productivity standards
  • Support coders with complex coding scenarios, escalations, and education
  • Monitor and improve coding quality, turnaround times, and operational efficiency
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders on process improvements and coding compliance initiatives
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of coding guidelines, payer requirements, and regulatory changes

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 5+ years of leadership experience in facility coding operations
  • Extensive expertise in:
    • Inpatient coding
    • Outpatient facility coding (ED, observation, ambulatory/day surgery)
  • Proven ability to function in a working manager capacity, including hands-on coding, auditing, and staff support
  • Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT/HCPCS, and official coding guidelines
  • Demonstrated experience with coding quality reviews, audits, and team performance management
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant coding certifications (e.g., RHIA, RHIT, CCS)
  • Prior experience in interim or consulting roles
  • Experience managing remote coding teams

Work Schedule & Engagement Details

  • Duration: 6–12 months (interim assignment)
  • Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM MST
  • Work Location: 100% Remote (no onsite requirements)
