Job Summary:

The Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program (VIOP) Therapist provides telehealth-based substance use and co-occurring mental health treatment services to adults participating in the Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). This position is responsible for facilitating group therapy sessions, providing individual therapy, completing assessments and ASAM level-of-care determinations, coordinating treatment planning, supporting prior authorization processes, and maintaining timely clinical documentation.

The therapist supports individuals in developing recovery skills, emotional regulation, relapse prevention strategies, and healthy coping mechanisms while maintaining a safe, structured, and therapeutic virtual treatment environment. This role collaborates closely with interdisciplinary team members to ensure quality care, treatment engagement, and compliance with Medicaid, CARF, Ohio Administrative Code, and agency standards.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Diagnose substance use disorders and/or co-occurring psychiatric disorders within scope of practice.
  • Evaluate client functioning, clinical presentation, and treatment needs while participating in the development, implementation, updating, and review of individualized treatment plans based on ASAM criteria, medical necessity, and recommended level of care.
  • Complete ASAM assessments and level-of-care determinations to support admissions, prior authorization requests, continued stay reviews, discharge planning, and coordination of care with insurance providers and interdisciplinary treatment teams.
  • Facilitate individual and group treatment services utilizing evidence-based practices including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), psychoeducation, trauma-informed interventions, relapse prevention, emotional regulation, coping skill development, and recovery-oriented treatment approaches.
  • Create and maintain a safe, structured, and therapeutic treatment environment while maintaining appropriate group dynamics, therapeutic boundaries, emotional safety, and participation expectations within both virtual and in-person settings.
  • Monitor client participation, treatment progress, emotional regulation, relapse risk, psychiatric stability, and ongoing appropriateness for continued treatment services.
  • Assist clients in developing healthy coping skills, communication skills, relapse prevention strategies, emotional regulation techniques, recovery supports, and healthy lifestyle behaviors.
  • Complete accurate, timely, clinically appropriate, and audit-ready documentation for all services rendered, including progress notes, treatment plans, treatment plan reviews, ASAM assessments, discharge summaries, and other required clinical documentation that demonstrates medical necessity, treatment plan linkage, interventions provided, client progress, and continued need for services.
  • Verify and document telehealth appropriateness, client participation, and client location during virtual treatment services in accordance with agency policy and applicable regulations.
  • Conduct outreach and follow-up efforts related to missed appointments, disengagement, barriers to treatment participation, and identified clinical concerns.
  • Assist in de-escalating behavioral health crises and responding to emergencies while coordinating with appropriate emergency personnel and support systems when clinically indicated.
  • Collaborate with psychiatry, medical providers, case management, peer recovery support, admissions, utilization review, and leadership staff to ensure continuity and coordination of care.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, supervision, audits, trainings, quality improvement initiatives, and company meetings.
  • Stay informed regarding current evidence-based practices, treatment modalities, behavioral health trends, and regulatory standards related to substance use and co-occurring mental health treatment.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe and secure treatment environment for clients and staff.
  • Demonstrate flexibility to adapt to operational changes, scheduling needs, program development initiatives, and responsibilities not specifically delineated within the job description as part of functioning within an addiction treatment team.

Education Requirements:

  • Required: Bachelor's degree in social work, Behavioral Science, or applicable field of study.
  • Preferred: Master's degree in social work, Behavioral Science, or applicable field of study.

License Requirements: LSW or LPC license valid in the State of Ohio.

Experience Requirements:

  • 1 year of therapy experience required, 3 preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience in coordinating patient care and treating individuals with behavioral health disorders and substance use disorders, including co-occurring mental health conditions and Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT).
  • Knowledge and competency in providing individual and group therapy services utilizing evidence-based practices, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), psychoeducation, trauma-informed care, relapse prevention interventions, coping skill development, emotional regulation interventions, and recovery-oriented treatment approaches.
  • Ability to facilitate structured psychoeducational and process-oriented group therapy sessions while maintaining therapeutic boundaries, emotional safety, participation expectations, and appropriate group dynamics within both virtual and in-person treatment settings.
  • Ability to effectively engage clients with varying levels of motivation, insight, emotional regulation, and readiness for change while appropriately managing conflict, resistance, disruptive behaviors, emotional dysregulation, and crisis situations within the treatment environment.
  • Knowledge and competency in individualized treatment planning, including development of clinically appropriate problem statements, measurable goals, objectives, interventions, treatment plan reviews, discharge planning, and ongoing progress monitoring based on client presentation, ASAM dimensions, medical necessity, and level-of-care needs.
  • Knowledge of ASAM Criteria and level-of-care determination, including ability to complete ASAM assessments and support prior authorization requests, continued stay reviews, utilization management processes, and coordination of care with insurance providers and interdisciplinary treatment teams.
  • Competency in crisis intervention, de-escalation techniques, suicide and homicide risk assessment, safety planning, overdose response, withdrawal symptom recognition, and emergency response procedures.
  • Proficiency in electronic health record systems, telehealth service delivery platforms, and clinical documentation systems, including the ability to complete accurate, timely, clinically appropriate, and audit-ready documentation supporting medical necessity, interventions provided, treatment progress, and continued need for services.
  • Knowledge of Medicaid, CARF, Ohio Administrative Code, managed care documentation standards, patient rights, confidentiality regulations, professional ethics, and discrimination regulations related to behavioral healthcare and substance use treatment services.
