Mission

Own and execute the firm's training, professional development, and learning infrastructure strategy, against priorities set by the COO, so that attorneys, case managers, administrative staff, and all team members can reliably acquire the knowledge, skills, and competencies needed to drive better outcomes, higher productivity, and superior client service, while upholding the compliance, quality, and performance standards established across the organization.

About Berry Law

Berry Law is a nationally recognized, Veteran-owned law firm dedicated to protecting the rights of veterans and helping them secure the benefits they earned through their service. The training programs and professional development we build directly shape how effectively our attorneys and staff serve clients. If you enjoy building teams, solving complex learning challenges, and turning training into real-world results in a fast-paced environment, this may be the perfect opportunity for you.

Position Summary

The Chief Training Officer leads the firm's training, professional development, curriculum design, learning technology, and continuous improvement initiatives. Working from priorities set by the COO and in collaboration with department heads and practice leaders, the CTO turns operational, practice, and client-service needs into prioritized training programs and delivers them through internal teams, external partners, and scalable learning platforms. This is a hands-on leadership role: the first year balances strategy and team-building with direct training delivery and curriculum development, maturing into a true executive function.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy & Leadership

  • Define and execute the firm's training, professional development, curriculum, learning technology, and compliance training roadmap based on COO and practice-group priorities
  • Serve as the primary training and development partner to the COO and practice heads, turning needs into prioritized learning initiatives and programs
  • Present training program recommendations and ROI analyses to senior management for funding decisions
  • Lead, coach, and develop any training staff, instructional designers, and learning coordinators

Training Program Development & Delivery

  • Design and implement comprehensive training programs for all staff members, including attorneys, legal professionals, case managers, administrative staff, and support personnel
  • Oversee familiarization training for all employees across all departments
  • Design and conduct ongoing training sessions tailored to the needs of all practice areas and operational functions
  • Deliver training in multiple formats (in-person, virtual, self-paced, workshops) to accommodate diverse learning styles and schedules
  • Develop competency assessments and certification programs to measure skill acquisition

Curriculum Development & Review

  • Develop and maintain a structured curriculum for all practice areas and operational functions
  • Conduct an annual curriculum review to ensure alignment with current laws, regulations, technology, and best practices
  • Perform annual practice standardization reviews, including evaluating technology to improve efficiency and performance
  • Create training materials, manuals, job aids, and resources that support continuous learning

Compliance & Continuous Improvement

  • Train team members to comply with changes to practice standards, regulatory requirements, and organizational policies in a timely manner
  • Stay informed about industry developments and incorporate innovative training methods, adult learning principles, and emerging technologies
  • Regularly evaluate the success of training programs through feedback, assessments, performance metrics, and outcomes, making data-driven adjustments as needed
  • Implement learning management systems (LMS) and other technology platforms to track training completion and effectiveness

Professional Development Coordination

  • Assess the development needs of all staff members through performance reviews, skills assessments, and organizational needs analysis
  • Create tailored growth plans and career development pathways for employees at all levels
  • Develop mentorship, coaching, and leadership development programs to foster career advancement
  • Coordinate external training opportunities, continuing education, and professional certifications as appropriate

Training Administration & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate records of all training activities, attendance, and completion rates
  • Prepare regular reports on training metrics, effectiveness, and ROI for leadership review
  • Manage training budget and resources efficiently
  • Ensure compliance with all mandatory training requirements (e.g., ethics, compliance, safety)

Collaboration & Leadership

  • Partner with department heads and practice leaders to align training objectives with organizational goals and department-specific requirements
  • Act as a subject-matter expert to provide guidance and support on complex processes, systems, and best practices
  • Foster a culture of continuous learning, professional growth, and knowledge sharing across the organization
  • Lead cross-functional training initiatives that promote collaboration and operational excellence

What Success Looks Like

Twelve months in, this hire is a success when:

  • A comprehensive training curriculum is in place for all practice areas and operational functions, with measurable competency improvements across all staff levels
  • All employees have completed familiarization training and ongoing compliance training, with completion rates tracked and reported through an LMS
  • Practice-specific training programs are materially improving client outcomes, case quality, efficiency, and the attorney and staff experience
  • A portfolio of professional development initiatives (mentorship, leadership development, career pathways) is live with measurable engagement and career progression outcomes
  • A trusted training roadmap, tied to firm growth and practice needs, guides planning and investment
  • Training delivery methods (in-person, virtual, self-paced) are right-sized to learner needs and deliver measurable knowledge retention and skill application
  • All training programs meet firm compliance, quality, and performance requirements and stay aligned with the COO and practice leaders
  • The CTO has become the COO's trusted advisor on learning strategy, talent development, and organizational capability-building—a strategic partner, not only a training coordinator

Who Thrives Here

This role is likely a great fit if you:

  • Thrive in a lean, high-expectation environment where priorities can shift quickly
  • Enjoy working directly with attorneys and practice leaders and can translate between operational needs and learning solutions

  • Value measured experimentation with new training methods and technologies, piloting fast, scaling only what works and drives results
  • Take pride in building teams, programs, and learning systems that last

Qualifications

Required

  • 10+ years in training, instructional design, or organizational development roles, including 5+ years in senior leadership (Director, VP, or Chief Learning Officer) across curriculum design, training delivery, professional development, and/or learning technology

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Human Resources, Organizational Development, Business Administration, or related field required; Master's degree preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to design, implement, and evaluate successful training programs with measurable ROI
  • Strong communication, presentation, and facilitation skills for audiences at all levels
  • Proficiency with learning management systems (LMS), e-learning platforms, and training technologies
  • Expertise in adult learning principles, instructional design, and training delivery methods
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational and project management skills with ability to manage multiple priorities

Preferred

  • Experience training legal professionals, case managers, or in a professional services environment
  • Familiarity with legal operations or related fields
  • Certification in training or instructional design (e.g., CPLP, ATD Master Trainer, CPTD)
  • Experience with e-learning development tools and virtual training platforms

Why this Role Matters

This role is critical to ensuring that all staff members operate efficiently, remain compliant with legal and organizational standards, and are prepared to navigate the complexities of their respective roles while delivering exceptional outcomes for clients and supporting organizational excellence.
