ABOUT THE CALIFORNIA VIRTUAL ACADEMIES AND THE ENGAGEMENT COACH POSITION: 

The California Virtual Academies (a network of 9 public charter schools) delivers online/virtual home based instruction to students in grades TK-12 in California. We use K12, inc. as our curriculum provider for the basis of instruction and teachers provide live instruction via the Engageli platform. While our schools do offer some scheduling flexibility, students are still required to log into the online school daily, complete coursework, and attend instructional sessions. 

The Engagement Coach supports student success through targeted outreach, onboarding, and ongoing support to increase student engagement, participation, and academic achievement. This position collaborates with students, families, teachers, staff, and administrators to identify barriers, connect students with resources, and support successful participation in the educational program. Through data-informed support, family communication, progress monitoring, and engagement strategies, the Engagement Coach helps improve student outcomes and strengthen connections within the school community.


HOURS AND SALARY INFORMATION: 

Monday-Friday work hours between 8:00am-5:00pm. You are not allowed to have another job during these contracted hours. 

Hourly Rate: $22.25
All new hires are offered the first year/base salary amount. Salary is non-negotiable.

We do participate in CalPERS. Please contact your CalPERS counselor about how employment with California Virtual Academies may affect your personal PERS account. Only full time employees are offered health, dental, and vision benefits. Benefits information is only given out upon offer. We do provide training for all programs and we have a great staff to serve as your support system.


Job Description


Job Title: Engagement Coach 

Reports To: Assistant Director, Engagement and Community & Lead Engagement Coach

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Department: Compass

 

Overview: 

The Engagement Coach supports student success by providing targeted outreach, onboarding, and ongoing support designed to increase student engagement, participation, and academic achievement. This position collaborates with students, families, teachers, staff, and administrators to identify barriers, connect students with resources, and support successful participation in the educational program. Through data-informed support, family communication, progress monitoring, and engagement strategies, the Engagement Coach helps improve student outcomes and strengthen connections within the school community.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the onboarding of new students and families to promote successful transition into the school community and increase engagement with the educational program:

    • Host summer or winter engagement sessions as needed to welcome and support incoming families.

    • Provide email outreach to assigned onboarding students.

    • Complete and log Welcome contacts with new families as assigned.

    • Host live orientation and Q&A sessions as required.  

    • Assist learning coaches and students by answering questions, troubleshooting barriers, and providing additional or individualized support to ensure students can access instruction, participate consistently, and successfully engage with school.

  • Under the direction of the Lead Engagement Coach, coordinate student support with other members of the Compass Team, teachers, staff, and administrators to implement all aspects of the Compass support program.

  • Support assigned student caseloads by monitoring engagement, identifying needs, providing targeted support, and connecting students and families with appropriate resources.

  • Hold required student conferences and support sessions to monitor progress, promote engagement, address barriers, and support academic success.

  • Develop email and newsletter resources to keep students and families informed of classroom activities and learning goals.

  • Provide social-emotional learning resources to students and families, as required, and as needed.

  • Host weekly Continuing Care sessions to provide opportunities for peer engagement, additional support, and Q & A.

  • Create and maintain resources for students.

  • Maintain detailed documentation on support provided to and communication with each student/family.

  • Communicate consistently with teachers and administrators to coordinate support for students.

  • Use engagement, attendance, academic, and participation data to identify student needs, guide supports, monitor progress, and adjust interventions.

  • Attend meetings, conferences, and trainings that support implementation of student engagement strategies, program goals, identified student needs, and responsibilities aligned with the purpose of the position. 

  • Support the coordination and administration of assessments, including make-up testing, to promote student participation and support improved student outcomes. 

  • Participate in school activities and initiatives that support student engagement, family connection, academic success, and program goals. 

  • Perform other program-related duties, as assigned, that are consistent with the funding source, the approved program plan, and the allowable and intended uses of funds for the position.


This position is funded through grant funds and is contingent upon the continued availability of those funds. The position supports the implementation of supplemental programs and services aligned with approved plans, identified student needs, and goals designed to increase student engagement, participation, and academic achievement.


Requirements/Experience:

  • Must reside in the state of California.        

  • Prior experience working with at-risk youth.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

  • Detail oriented.

  • Able to balance and complete multiple projects accurately and on time.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and Google Suite.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with both students and adults.

  • Self-directed but comfortable working as part of a team.

  • Ability to travel to events, as assigned.


Certificates and Licenses:

Bachelor’s degree desired or relevant work experience.

This position is a virtual position working from a home office.  Must have ability to travel throughout the school year within and between assigned geographic areas to support students, attend regularly scheduled meetings, proctor state exams and participate in school activities and orientations.

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Restrictions on Time Off:

Professional Development: No days off during assigned professional development days.

Launch: No more than two days off per calendar week during fall and spring launch (August; January/February).

Testing: No more than two consecutive days off during weeks of make-up testing (mid-May to the end of the school year).

End of Year: Dates between June 10th and June 15th are approved based on completion of end-of-year tasks.
