Book Designer / Production Artist - InDesign & Print

One Book at a Time Publishing, the book-production division of The Print Site in Addison, Texas, is looking for an experienced Book Designer / Production Artist to assist with high-quality custom hardcover and softcover book projects.

We are particularly interested in people who have actually designed, typeset or prepared books for commercial printing, rather than someone whose experience is primarily general graphic design.

Our projects include family histories, memoirs, corporate histories, photo books, cookbooks, children's books and other highly customized publications, generally produced in relatively short quantities.

Responsibilities may include:

• Book interior layout and typesetting in Adobe InDesign
 • Creating and maintaining paragraph and character styles
 • Parent/master pages, templates and long-document production
 • Placing, correcting and managing photographs and other images
 • Pagination and proof corrections
 • Preparing print-ready PDFs
 • Designing or preparing book covers
 • Setting up bleeds, spines and other cover components
 • Reviewing customer-supplied files and identifying production problems
 • Working with our production staff on unusual book requirements
 • Helping develop efficient, repeatable book-production workflows

Experience with commercial printing and prepress is highly desirable.

 • EasyCatalog or other data-driven publishing
 • Automated InDesign workflows or scripting
 • Automated preflight
 • AI-assisted production tools
 • Specialty finishing

We are actively exploring software, automation and AI to make book production faster, more consistent and less dependent on repetitive manual work. An interest in learning and applying new production technology is a plus.

We are interested in finding the right specialist rather than forcing this into a traditional full-time position. Depending upon experience and capabilities, the arrangement could be part-time, freelance/contract, project-based or hybrid. We may also consider substantially remote work for an exceptional book-production specialist.

One Book at a Time Publishing / The Print Site has been in business for more than 40 years. We manufacture our books in-house and work directly with customers whose projects often require considerably more attention than a typical online book-printing service provides.
