The Role

The AVP – Transportation Broker is a producer role on the Breakwater Markets team, a Cover Whale sister company that specializes in commercial auto and trucking placement through retail agents. This person builds and grows the retail agent channel, including Cover Whale's existing agency partners, drives quoted premiums, and brings deep market knowledge to place each submission with the right market. The AVP reports to the Senior Vice President, works closely with the Executive Vice President, and helps shape the Agency Management System, service standards and renewal process as the team scales.

Responsibilities:

  • Retail Agent Development — Cultivate existing and new retail agent relationships and build relationships with Cover Whale's existing retail agency partners (the One Door Concept); contribute to the team goal of onboarding testing agents and retail agents against the targets set in the quarterly scorecard.
  • Production — Quote new business to contribute to the Breakwater team goal for GWP quoted and meet the individual GWP quoted targets set in the quarterly scorecard.
  • Market Expertise — Become an expert in current market guidelines and appetite within two weeks of hire, and use that knowledge to place each submission with the right market.
  • Market Development — Refer existing market relationships to the EVP and SVP for vetting on an ongoing basis, with the goal of filling gaps in Breakwater's market and product offerings; meet the market referral targets set in the quarterly scorecard.
  • Agency Management System — Achieve and maintain expert level proficiency in Meridian AMS and recommend improvements and added technology for the AMS. Attend all weekly team meetings with the EVP and SVP to discuss AMS enhancements.
  • Service Standards — Assist in the creation and adherence to the workflow for service level agreements (SLAs) covering, at a minimum, quote, bind and service items (endorsements and cancellations).
  • Renewals — Assist in building the renewal process and determining the required headcount for in-force accounts. Ensure renewal process is operationalized in accordance with established standards. Proactively remarket accounts in a timely manner.
  • Actively incorporate AI and other emerging technologies into daily workflows to drive efficiency and innovation, while maintaining sound judgment, data integrity, and compliance standards.

Working Conditions: Fully remote position. Standard business hours, with prompt responsiveness to agents and markets to meet service level standards. Primarily office-based computer and phone work, with occasional travel to meet agents and markets and attend industry events.

Requirements

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of experience in commercial auto or trucking insurance brokerage, wholesale placement, or underwriting.
  • Existing relationships with trucking-focused retail agents and with specialty or E&S markets that could fill gaps in Breakwater's market offerings.
  • Experience building SLAs, service workflows or renewal processes for an insurance team.
  • Familiarity with telematics-based insurance or driver safety programs.
  • Experience using AI tools in day-to-day work.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Established relationships with retail agents and with insurance markets (carriers, MGAs or program administrators) in the commercial trucking space.
  • Working knowledge of how markets set guidelines and appetite, and what each submission requires.
  • Active Property & Casualty insurance license in your resident state, or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of hire.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and relationship-building skills, with the discipline to meet service level standards on quotes, binds and service items.
  • Proficiency with agency management systems and the ability to reach expert level in Meridian AMS.
