Role Overview
We are seeking an AV Technical Designer / AV CAD Designer with strong AutoCAD skills and an understanding of commercial audiovisual (AV) systems, technical layouts, and construction documentation.
This role combines CAD drafting with AV technical design support, translating engineering requirements and project specifications into accurate, construction-ready drawings.
Candidates with commercial AV experience are preferred, while those with relevant low-voltage, electrical, telecommunications, MEP, or BIM drafting backgrounds will also be considered.
Key Responsibilities:
Develop AV construction drawings, shop drawings, and technical layouts using AutoCAD and/or Revit, including floor plans, reflected ceiling plans, rack and wall elevations, signal-flow diagrams, cable schedules, plate and panel details, and infrastructure riser diagrams.
Translate engineering markups, project specifications, and technical requirements into accurate, coordinated drawings.
Assist with AV equipment placement, rack configurations, cable routing, device connectivity, display layouts, sightlines, viewing angles, and speaker and microphone placement.
Review architectural, electrical, MEP, and construction drawings to identify AV coordination conflicts and infrastructure requirements.
Coordinate AV infrastructure, including backboxes, conduit, power, data, structural backing, ceiling devices, and cable pathways, with engineers, architects, general contractors, and other trades.
Revise drawings based on engineering redlines, RFIs, change orders, and field feedback.
Prepare submittal packages, as-built documentation, and technical drawings for construction, estimating, and sales support.
Maintain CAD blocks, symbols, title blocks, templates, drawing standards, revision history, and document control across multiple projects.
Requirements
Required Qualifications (Must-Have):
At least 2+ years of AV technical design, drafting experience, or related construction documentation experience.
Strong proficiency in AutoCAD.
Understanding of technical drawings, schematics, layouts, and construction documentation.
Revit experience, including BIM coordination, families, and work-sharing.
Familiarity with AV platforms and technologies, including Crestron, Extron, Q-SYS, Biamp, Shure, Microsoft Teams Rooms, Zoom Rooms, and Dante/AV-over-IP.
Experience with Bluebeam Revu, D-Tools, XTEN-AV, Microsoft Visio, Autodesk Construction Cloud/BIM 360, Microsoft 365, or Adobe Acrobat.
Knowledge of AVIXA standards, structured cabling practices, display sightlines, viewing angles, and speaker or microphone coverage layouts.
AVIXA CTS certification; CTS-D is an advantage.
Experience with low-voltage systems, structured cabling, electrical drafting, telecommunications, security systems, CCTV, access control, MEP, BIM coordination, or systems integration.
Preferred Qualifications (Nice-to-Have):
Experience producing AV signal-flow diagrams, rack and wall elevations, device and cable schedules, shop drawings, and as-built documentation.
Ability to read and interpret architectural, electrical, MEP, and construction drawings.
Understanding of technical systems, equipment connectivity, and infrastructure layouts, with the ability to learn or apply AV signal flow involving audio, video, control, and networking.
Strong attention to detail, organization, and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
Good written and verbal English communication skills and the ability to coordinate with internal teams and external trades.
