Does a cover letter still matter for remote jobs?

Location stops limiting the pool, so anything that separates two similar resumes counts for more.
DailyRemote indexes thousands of remote job posts every month, so we see how employers ask for letters. Most mark them optional. A few make them the first thing they read, and remote-first companies do this more often than anyone else.
That is not sentiment. A distributed team runs on written communication, so for a remote role the letter doubles as a writing sample. A rambling letter answers a question the interview was going to ask anyway.
The honest version of the advice is narrow. A cover letter will not rescue a resume that does not fit, and it is not a gatekeeper. It is a tie-breaker. When a recruiter has two candidates who look the same on paper, the letter decides which one gets the call, and the deciding line is almost never a skill. It is the reason you want this job, the explanation for the gap, or the logic behind the career switch.
Which is why a generic letter is worse than no letter. It costs the recruiter time and tells them you sent the same file to forty companies. Same for an AI draft that opens with "I am writing to express my interest": the tell is the phrasing and the shape, not the fact that a model wrote it.
