Communication and Advocacy Specialist
Seeking: Communications Specialist · advocacy manager · Communication Director · Stakeholder Engagement
I lead strategic communications and advocacy for humanitarian, research and climate organisations, turning complex evidence into speeches, briefings, policy messages and media stories that governments, donors and the public act on. I have done this for 21 years across Africa, at the ICRC, IITA (a CGIAR research centre), Power for All, the Global EverGreening Alliance and, most recently, as a UN Volunteer. Two things I’m proud of: As a UN Volunteer with Abyei FM 102.3, the only radio station serving a disputed border area, I coordinated a global team of six and led the design and launch of a digital communications strategy, including a 6-month roadmap, content calendar, brand guide and templates. We trained local journalists to run it themselves, despite limited staff, resources and connectivity. At IITA, I built and managed a network of 150+ journalists across Africa for media advocacy, and drafted speeches for presidents, ministers and the Director General. Next, I want a remote senior role such as Head of Communications, Advocacy Lead or Executive Engagement Adviser with a global NGO, foundation, research institute or multilateral organisation. I work well across time zones from Nairobi (EAT), with good overlap across Africa, Europe and the Middle East, and I’m used to coordinating distributed teams and working in low-connectivity settings. I’m also completing a PhD in Information and Communication Studies. Languages: English, Swahili and intermediate French.
