Job Overview

The World Languages Editorial Assistant works with the lead editor of Languages and Linguistics at Georgetown University Press to support the publication of world languages textbooks and linguistics titles. The press is a small, highly collaborative group of dedicated publishing professionals.


This role is a full-time temporary position available August 2026 until February 2027.


This position is a unique opportunity to learn more about book publishing and to gain experience in editorial/acquisitions. This person will work on award-winning world languages and linguistics textbooks and learn how books are developed. We seek someone with second language proficiency (see below), giving those with knowledge of languages other than English a special opportunity to use their skills.


Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Work closely with lead editor of Languages and Linguistics to project manage a wide variety of projects. Liaise with authors, as needed.
  • Manage the peer review process for all languages and linguistics proposals, with potential to work on books in other subject areas.
  • Perform some light developmental editing of textbooks, depending on skills and experience.
  • Assess and format manuscripts to prepare for publication, including liaising with authors on formatting needs, evaluating art quality and permissions, and review of text permissions needs.
  • Multimedia: Assess, QA, and review multimedia files to prepare for publication, as needed. Post and organize webpages, as needed, for additional multimedia resources on WordPress websites.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Interactions

The World Languages Editorial Assistant (WLEA) aids the lead editor in the preparation of complex manuscripts and multimedia for publication. World Languages textbooks are key to the success of the press, which is known for its high-quality textbooks in languages that are underserved in textbook publishing. The WLEA reports to and will work closely with the Director of Georgetown Languages to project manage 20-40 projects in various states of completion.

Requirements and Qualifications:


Required

  • B.A. or B.S. and a minimum of 1-2 years’ experience working in an office required.
  • Intermediate proficiency or higher in a language other than English and fluency in English. We prefer the second language be Russian or Arabic but will seriously consider candidates other languages.
  • Remote position but work hours must be during Eastern Time regular business hours.

Preferred

  • At least 1 year of experience in book publishing.
