ON-CALL TOXICOLOGIST

To support ICF’s dynamic growth and expanding client base, we are seeking an On-Call Toxicologist to work in our Health Science Practice. This group of 100+ science professionals provide toxicology, hazard assessment, epidemiology, risk assessment, exposure assessment, environmental modeling, and related support that addresses the full spectrum of potentially hazardous agents, including chemicals and microbes. We specialize in identifying, quantifying, and documenting the effects of environmental pollutants, such as metals, pesticides, and volatile organic compounds, on human health and the environment. 


The On-Call Toxicologist’s project work will support federal agencies (such as U.S. EPA and NIEHS), state agencies, and private sector clients in developing reports that assess the human health impacts of pollutants. Specific activities include qualitative literature review activities, support for scientific meetings, and project management. The On-Call Toxicologist will contribute to the development of innovative, accurate, timely, and high-quality products and services, typically working on multiple projects with all levels of staff; they have the opportunity to apply their academic knowledge, gain exposure to major projects, and interact with experts and clients in the field, while building content knowledge and consulting skills. Location: Remote.


Hours: This is a part-time on-call position. The On-Call Toxicologist will work between 5 and 30 hours per week to support work on an as-needed basis. The hours are flexible. Students pursuing a Ph.D., scientists in a Post Doc, and toxicologists who are taking a break from full time employment are encouraged to apply.


Please note: This position does not involve hands-on laboratory or field work.  


As an On-Call Toxicologist, you will:  

  • Work on a diverse team that specializes in identifying and quantifying the effects of environmental pollutants, such as metals, pesticides, and volatile organic compounds, on human health and the environment.  
  • Review scientific and peer-reviewed literature to research a broad variety of scientific topics in environmental risk assessment, synthesize findings, and communicate them through various formats and media (e.g., written reports, online websites, visualizations).  
  • Use a variety of data management and visualization tools to maintain rigorous databases and use them to create engaging end-product visualizations and dashboards. 
  • Conduct study data extraction using electronic systematic review procedures and tools. 
  • Conduct data and statistical analysis involving Excel, Access, R, SAS, Python, SQL, VBA, and/or other software.  
  • Participate in and support scientific workshop activities including notetaking, developing workshop summary reports, and other event logistics.   
  • Follow and implement standardized QA/QC procedures on documents and reports. 
  • Perform Toxicology systematic review tasks, including literature screening, study quality evaluation, and study data extraction.
  • Support risk assessment report development, including writing methods, results, and discussion sections, reviewing conclusions based on the data, and synthesizing findings into a weight of evidence analysis.
  • Conduct dose-response analyses when needed.

As an On-Call Toxicologist, you will have:


  • The ability to interact with and present project updates to clients and develop quality professional relationships.  Strong data-science skills including experience managing and visualizing large datasets 
  • Exceptional research and scientific writing skills, including editing, using reference management software (e.g. EndNote), and proofreading skills.   
  • Strong qualitative and quantitative data collection, analysis, and visualization skills. Experience with environmental science systematic reviews is a plus.  
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including experience with developing and delivering presentations.   
  • The ability to prioritize, multi-task, and work in groups, individually, and virtually under strict deadlines in a fast-paced environment. 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Toxicology, Epidemiology, Public Health, Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or related subject, or Bachelor’s degree in any of these fields combined with equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience.

Pay Range - There are multiple factors that are considered in determining final pay for a position, including, but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and competencies that align to the specified role, geographic location, education and certifications as well as contract provisions regarding labor categories that are specific to the position.

The pay range for this position based on full-time employment is:

$60,940.00 - $103,598.00
